No, they do not. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land, if a law is clearly unconstitutional (like the drug laws) - anybody can refuse to enforce them - states, presidents, police, sheriffs, judges, juries.
Most people are complacent because they don't want the fuss, but those few who do go out of their way to actually enforce the rule of law (a law which is unjust is no law at all, and is the reverse of the rule of law) perform a great service to those who are complacent.
But, unless the thread creator responds to me, I will not post again. Don't want to derail the thread anymore than what the creator will tolerate.

I don't know what to say. I don't have a defense for this. I've seen and done a lot of things that I'd probably have done differently. I won't go into detail here, though. I never took a bribe or anything like that. I'll just say that having that job put me into a lot of crazy situations and I didn't come out unscathed. The person I was when I started wasn't the person I was when I quit.

Well, nobody can change what happened in the past. I understand that.
Like I said, I know you're a decent person. The system just has a way of turning people against people. They let the police think they're enforcing the rule of law, the TSA think they're defending the borders, and the army think they're spreading democracy. The tyrannical state thrives on confusion.
I can tell there's a lot that you regret about your time in the police force, and regret is one of the worst feelings. It has all the shittiness of feeling bad, with none of the goodness of being able to amend what you did.
