Well, nobody can change what happened in the past. I understand that.
Like I said, I know you're a decent person. The system just has a way of turning people against people. They let the police think they're enforcing the rule of law, the TSA think they're defending the borders, and the army think they're spreading democracy. The tyrannical state thrives on confusion.
I can tell there's a lot that you regret about your time in the police force, and regret is one of the worst feelings. It has all the shittiness of feeling bad, with none of the goodness of being able to amend what you did.
