Forums - Nintendo - How well do you think the Wii U can advance Cel Shading?

When I look at games like Valkyria Chronicles and Dragon Quest 10, cel shading doesn't seem to have advanced much. I wonder, how will games that make uses of this technique be enhanced by the Wii U?

Then, taking games like Persona 4 Arena into account, how well will 2D animationed games work?

And why are there so many people who show such hatred towards this art style?

Do a lot of people have a hatred towards the art style? Some of the most beautiful games I've ever seen were cel-shaded, the graphics hold up really well over time as well. Though, I guess that's why not so many developers use it, they'd rather have the bang of good graphics now and not have to worry about the future.

Certainly Jet Set Radio, Wild ARMs 3, Wind Waker & Valkyria have had wonderful cel-shading. DQVIII as well, though I've never actually played the game myself.

Perhaps that's it actually, they only work really well in certain genres of game, so their usage is kinda limited.

I don't really see cel shading becoming much better with improvements in hardware. In fact, my favorite cel shading is still that of Jet Grind Radio.

Easy, it will be more like this.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

That game isn't doing anything new or technically impressive. The geometry is ultra simplistic and so is the shading. Valkyria Chronicles did more graphically with cel shading than that. So did Eternal Sonata. Heck, so did Red Steel 2.

lilbroex is correct about Ni No Kuni. The hand-drawn stuff in there is pretty spectacular, but when you get right down to what's actually rendered, there isn't that much going on, as i observed from watching the game played in HD for a while during my stay in Japan.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

What's this sexy game?

agreed. You look at some of those games, even Zelda wind waker, they basically never age because of cel shading. I dont think it can improve a whole lot. Wish more games did focus on art style vs realisim.
