Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How is the 3DS really doing compared to the DS in the U.S? 3DS/DS sales gap~

I think it'll be more interesting to compare the second/third years. The DS really exploded those years, pulling 400k a week... in the off seasons.

Pretty interesting. I bet this Holiday will be a big booster for the 3DS.

Druing the DS Handhelds second full holiday it pushed out 870,773 thousand in November and 1,547,968 million in December of 2006. For some reason I think the 3DS will out do that this year.

yeah, Superchunk think it'll sell 9m units this holiday...

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

^ where did he say that at? If that happens then it will be hard for the 3DS to ever fall behind the DS.

Here you go:

Apparently the 3DS sold 5m units last holiday...

EDIT: I see now that YOU'RE refering to the US only... Chunky was speculating world wide. Sorry!

the ds was a ridiculously unique concept, that took time to get rolling, with duel screens and touch screen technology. The 3ds outselling the ds is not suprising at all. Whats suprising is that ridiculous pricecut needed for the 3ds to achieve that goal. The 3ds might stay ahead this year as well, but it will never get anywhere near the sales the ds got in 2008/2009/2010. It might come close during the holidays with ridiculous bundles and temporary pricecuts, but it will never have the nonholiday sales the ds did back then.

The DS was a slow starter in the US, all those figures are before the DSlite launch which is when DS sales exploded.

In 2007 the only month DS didn't crest 400k was January, and that was due to supply issues not lack of demand. Actually after January 2007, the DS didn't go below 350k in any month until after the 3DS launch.

The 3DS doesn't have the equivalent of the 3DSlite in the pipeline as far as I know (instead they are making a bigger version?) I'm sure it will do well and globally I don't foresee many situations that will stop it passing 100 million in the end, but it isn't going to emulate the DS's success.

I think the 3DSXL will explode. Does anyone really want a 3DSlite? I think everyone wold have been happy with the original DS just going over to the XL instead of the lite. Back then anything would have been better than that clunky, ugly, original DS that no one really wanted to have. Now we all know better, and the XL is the proper thing to do. Besides, the original 3DS is already like the lite version. The only reason they made it so small is so that eventually they could upgrade it to the XL. Now that they played their cards so early the next step in the 3DS evolution will just have to be integrating that second circle pad in a few years or so. Either way, with the upgrade, Mario, and the holidays the 3DSXL should stay high for a while now. The library is finally getting stronger, their will be Wii U/3DS connectivity, more eshop games, and much more going for this little handheld.

It is about to blow up like the DS did.

I don't know Ryan, I mean, the big hitters for the DS already have their sequels out.  Mario Kart, Mario Bros. 3D Land, Nintendogs and Cats.  Yeah New Super Mario Bros. 2 comes out in August, but why would that one game do what those 3 games couldn't?  I mean, they did boost 3DS sales, but the sales weren't sustainable, not DS levels anyways.  Though, as I said before, we need a few years to see how a few more key releases do for the handheld.

Because these are the games that people are waiting for. Mario3dland is on pace to hit where Mario 64 DS made it to in sales. It needs that push along with a handheld that people actually want. Big is better. Mario Kart 7 by itself was not going to do anything.

I just hope that NSMB 2 is not so different that it pushes some away from purchasing it.

1 New Super Mario Bros. DS 2006 Platform Nintendo 10.45 8.66 6.46 2.81 28.38
1 Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day DS 2005 Misc Nintendo 4.71 9.05 4.16 2.03 19.96
2 Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day DS 2005 Misc Nintendo 3.41 5.31 5.32 1.18 15.21

I didn't mean software sales.  The 3DS is barely outselling the PS3, while its predecessor was consistently outselling the PS2 by a good margin.  I'm just saying it may be worth the few years of waiting to see if the release of a few more key franchises can propel the 3DS to the DS' success.

^ I was not talking about software sales either. But these three games were obviously huge motivators for people to buy the DS. Even mario kart 7 has already proven to be a big motivator.

Then why isn't the 3DS destroying the sales page?  Or rather why haven't they had a sustained hardware boost?

I think NSMB 2 and the Xl are gonna give a big boost, i predict a big holiday for the 3ds. Also the next generation of pokemon will most likely be a system seller
