Forums - General - Did America's NASA Nuke Jupiter in 2003?

Hope they did it, cause it gives clues over the composition of the core of a gas giant. I dont think they did, because there is no reason to hide it, unless they were afraid of an intenational backlash claiming they are toying with things that can jeoperdise life on earth.
Dont think it does though. I dont really think we have the power to destroy jupiter.

It was probably just something that hit the planet and NASA missed. Can even be ajust a speck of dust in the guys telescope.

Unlikely... but in this day and age I wouldn't be surprised either way.

I don't believe NASA would send a nuclear weapon into space for the same reason they won't send nuclear waste into space:

If anything at all went wrong, there would be devastating aftermath. Nuclear fallout would kill a lot of people.
I don't think NASA would take that risk so they could nuke Jupiter.

The probe, like any RTG-powered craft isn't a nuclear weapon. RTGs are very basic and well-documented. There is nothing really deadly about them, outside of a catastrophic explosion that'd send the radioactive material across an area - and even then, it may not be enough to cause significant harm.

What you have with the argument is the possibility of something happening that wasn't expected in the least. It basically broke the craft down, and gave a possible process in which the uranium could be turned into a weapons-grade state of matter, then detonated.

Incredibly unlikely, but still plausible. Would be absolutely crazy if true.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Juipiter was nuked because the American government believed Juipiter to possess WMD's. America, fuck yeah!

Guess NASA wanted to know the effects of a Nuke on a gas giant.

No biggie. It aint Earth after all.

America, making the solar system a safer place since 2003.

That's a crazy awesome story. At least it shows with Cassini that if they did do such a major accident they are trying to not replicate it. Maybe they intend to let Cassini use up all its nuclear fuel first, thus removing any chance it has at being a bomb.

that dark spot looks 10 times bigger than earth. I doubt we can make something that destructive

Is that you, ninpie? If so, go post it in the picture thread.
