Assuming you have a smartphone for all the web/media/etc. functionality you'd want (in a far more convenient form factor anyway), then sure go for the 3DS XL over the Vita if you prefer the types of games coming for it.
At the end of the day, really it's the main thing either one of these devices is any good at, everything else, a smartphone is more convenient and generally just does things better (iOS browser >>> Vita browser >>> 3DS browser).
If Sony doesn't get their crap together fast the Vita could suffer from a very thin library. The 3DS because of its success in Japan is likely to get a flood of Japanese support for the rest of its life span along with Nintendo's own support, which honestly is simply better than what Sony provides the PSP/Vita (Sony just doesn't care as much about handhelds as Nintendo does, lets be honest. The 3DS gets games from Nintendo's top teams, not just the B/C tier teams).
