Assuming that they can't afford to cut the price (yet). It may be that the PSV already is selling at a large enough lose that they can't justify a pricecut. Sony is usually quick to use pricecut to fix a sales problem.
Sony also let people know how much they lose per PS3 unit from the start, but nothing for PSV. What are they hiding?
| superchunk said: Actually this I can believe. Its too new and they already have no room for a price drop. When 3DS dropped, it had a very healthy margin and dropping its price only put it a little negative. The Vita is only a little positive at this point and doesn't have the room. Instead they need to focus on its value and that's where bundles come in. So, expect big bundling with CoD and AssCreed and any big 1st party title along with the smallest memory card in each bundle. |
I also agree.
Vita needs must-have games with ads, not a price drop. The proprietary memory card should have been cheap as chips too, in comparison to modern day USBs, it looks like a rip-off.
Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. " thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

You are comparing a almost 6 year old hardware with a hardware that is 8months old...

I don't know...
1. How are they gonna hit or even get remotely close to their 10m forecast without a cut?
2. In the same article he says there's no PS3 cut coming but we know it is, so if he's lying about one he could be lying about the other. Obviously he's not gonna say a cut is coming months in advance.
3. PSV is made from off-the-shelf mobile (cell) phone components that go down in price very quickly, so it's not far fetched that a cut now is feasible.

Drop the price a token amount in Europe and Japan (around $20)
I feel this is the best option for many reasons
A) In Europe and Japan, the PSP is selling similarly to the Vita. Though the Vita CANNOT play all PSP games it is a suitable substitute. If the prices of the Vita and PSP were closer then people in those regions would be more likely to go for a Vita. No this won't create a huge increase in sales but killing the PSP in such a way I feel is nessecary in order for the Vita to truly find it's own.
B) $20 is not a huge amount. Thus people won't need/beg to be compensated in the same way as the Nintendo 3DS price cut.
C) A price cut will create a short term surge in sales, of any margin. As soon as a price cut happens the mentality of people (atleast myself) is that if you want something buy it then! You are the furtherest possible time from the next price cut by doing so.
D) It shows publishers that Sony is actually willing to do SOMETHING to keep the Vita on the market. I'm not saying the Vita is dead, but if we get to the holiday season and it's sales are still this awful it will be. A price drop of even a small amount might be a way to show publishers that Sony is committed and therefore they may make games which will obviously help.

Probably that they are making money on the HW. From all the evidence they are at least making a buck. Selling at a loss doesn't look good for a company having financial problems, but looks like a bargain other times. Selling at a profit is good for them right now but it might look like greed or make the Vita look overpriced like they are ripping consumers off, especially when there is such demand for a price cut. Announcing they are making a profit to the public would backlash so they are keeping quite on it, though they would keep quite if they are making a loss too even if they can't hide that from shareholders they can at leas avoid consumers from doubting the company's financial situation. It's just best to stay quite until the circumstances change.
Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

1. Bundling? And not only bundles with games and memory sticks, the new cheap 16GB PS3 will allow to offer PS3+PSV bundles starting from less than 400$
2. Well, you just answered your question yourself.
3. Agree, a $50 cut should become viable in less than a year from launch, given how fast cellphone tech evolves and its huge sales volume, but Sony may be willing to resist cutting before at least one year has passed from launch for product image sake and to avoid pissing early adopters off. If not possible, they'll at least try to cut later from launch than Ninty with 3DS, but don't forget that PSVita hasn't had its first Xmas outside of Japan yet, so Sony can count on a decent Xmas even without cutting price before, if it offers enough games.
