it's pretty much the same like the last olympics, between 90-120 medals or so^^ i would say that's what you should expect with 310 million people in a developed country and you could win maybe more but i wouldn't expect much more because you just can't win many medals. as example in team sports you can only win one of three medals and you will be always behind some countries which are specialized in something like china and table tennis or south korea in archery which is a school subject there.

Fact: Japan won 12 medals more in 2012 than in 2008 which is a great performance.

yeah that's true. sure gold is more worth but if you want to see how good a country is in sports you have to count at least all medals and maybe even top 10 places. so, japan lost some gold but they aren't a worse sports nation than they were 4 years ago.
