Forums - Nintendo - Developer: the Wii U controller can’t be used as a gimmick

well we already knew that devs were looking for ways to bring new experiences with the controller ( although its good to hear another confirm that )... beyond that nowhere in the article ( from what i'm seeing ) has a dev saying that the controller can't be used as a gimmick ( well the person would be stupid anyway for speaking for everyone developing for the wii u )

At the point where Boon mentions that they can't just slap the "pick a combo on the touchscreen" function on there and call it a day.

im happy that a fighting game dev is not going to resort to just putting moves on the touchscreen, I would never buy a Wii U fighting game if it came to that, people already spam enough online and that would just make it worst, learn how to actually play the game. However if the dev is smart they would allow rooms with no touch screen allowed.

yeah thats my point he's speaking for his dev team only not for all development for the wii u ( which obviously wouldn't make sense anyway ) which is what the thread title appears to be reffering to

maybe i just misinterpretted the thread title

I have one doubt... this game looked very nice in the comic con panel/trailers. Loved the characters (and future possibilities may be even better) and stages.

But... does it has a block button like MK or it's push backwards for blocking like SF? Because I can't stand block buttons.

I don't think the title implies that he's speaking for all devs.

I'm honestly just pleasantly surprised at the moment, not even speaking about the functional use of the GamePad. Just genuinely surprised that it's being released on Wii U. Maybe Nintendo has a chance with hardcore gamers in the next generation after all?

It is a fighting game, any use of the controller screen is a gimmick.

I'm sure that sufficient consideration would enable them to find uses that actually add to the experience.

Unfortunately, some people will consider it a gimmick irrespective of its value, simply because, to them, fighting games shouldn't use touchscreens. That is, they won't evaluate any idea on its merits, but will instead judge it as a gimmick because it uses it at all. Kind of like how some people still call the Wiimote itself a gimmick, despite some games making exceptionally good use of it - the fact that they use it, in such people's minds, makes it a gimmick.

It will be used as a gimmick...

wii was the #1 selling console for three years, and it was still used as a dumping ground for shovelware gimmicky motion controlled party games

I cannot see any outcome for the wiiu where it is treated as anything other than a gimmick, playing "catch up" to PS4/720...(or maybe catch up to PS3/360)

Just because there was a lot of shovelware doesn't mean the wii mote was a gimmick. The shovelware was the gimmick. We already have seen how to use the wii mote(the Conduit, Coruption, The Skyward Sword).

Now lets watch this new be ignored all around.

Developer NetherRealm is busy working on Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting game slated for release on the Wii U and other consoles in 2013. And they’re looking to use the new Wii U GamePad controller in innovative ways, instead of just presenting it as a gimmick.

“We’re going to have some conversation about the Wii U’s unique controller and how to use it in a fighting game that’s not just a gimmick” says NetherRealm’s Ed Boon to The Verge. He commented that the obvious thing would be to simply add the secret moves on the touchscreen where the player would just press them and fire off the moves. He notes that the new controller has to do more than that, and that they’re still working on how to implement the tablet controls. “It’s certainly not something that we’ve cracked yet”, he said. Injustice: Gods Among Us is a fighting game set in the DC Comics universe, made by the same people who did Mortal Kombat. For more on the game, check out some Injustice: Gods Among Us screenshots.

It’s great to hear that developers are taking the new tablet controller seriously, rather than just a gimmick where they can add the obvious buttons and features. The Wii had a big problem with cheap shovelware games that used the motion controls as a gimmick.

Normally in a semi-decent fighting game, spammers are a non-issue. I would much rather play against a spammer because you can just take advantage of frame delays with whatever move they are spamming and punish like crazy. Plus nothing could be more predictable than spammers when most good fighting games require you to be unpredictable with high-low mixups, etc to actually succeed in a competitive environment.

But yeah I would hate them to map moves on to the touch screen because it would hinder some of the newbies from actually learning to play the game properly. Super Street Fighter 4 3D comes to mind, and the lag online on that game just made things that much worse.
