Forums - Sony - Why are PS3 games so big!?

Seriously!  I was browsing the PSN (I refuse to call it the SEN) looking for something cool to download and everything was so damn big.  Even a title like Sports Champions is 12GB.  Sports Champions! 12GB!!  I could see if it were on disc since, from what I hear, a lot of data is repeated.  On the HDD, it shouldn't be so big....should it?

Anyway, I'm gonna go with inFamous Festival of Blood.

Maybe they just upload the disc versions as they are and don't bother compressing them. Or are you also referring to PSN-only titles?

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

I'm guessing some devs don't feel the need to practice compression when it comes to ps3 development since they're used to working with BD sizes. So when it comes to making the downloadable version, they don't have the best experience with it. I'd imagine a lot of SONY first party have this problem since SONY doesn't have to pay royaltees for software downloaded on their network like other publishers.

I think because a blu-ray is massive devs just leave it in there uncompressed and then when it's uploaded to PSN they don't compress it. I wonder how they handled Uncharted 2, nobody wants a fucking 40gb download lol That's half of my original PS3 hard drive.

PS3 exclusives tend to be huge. I think a lot of it is due to HD video and they aren't compressing data.

I don't think Sony has any restrictions on digital distro file size. MS does and even their on demand stuff is still no bigger than a DL DVD. If you let devs have as much space as they want, they will use as much as they can. If you restrict it you'll be surprised how creatively they use every last byte.

With that said I wish they all would understand that some of use don't have fast enough connections to download massive files in a timely manner.

I looked it up and duplicated data is pretty rare to find in recent games, it received a lot of attention when Bethesda did it for Oblivion, but developers countered it with installs. Games are so big because there is no penalty if they don't compress textures, audio or pre-rendered cutscenes. Why lose 10% texture quality or 80% video quality by compressing a file when you know it is going to fit on the disc regardless.

I don't know why the digital versions of PS3 games are still the same size, but I think it's because it needs to be identical to the disc version, maybe because of the developers choice or obstacles they would have to get over if they want to compress it.

Actually, Uncharted 1 and 2 are 20GB each. But based on torrent sites it looks like Uncharted 3 is 45GB.

But bear in mind, there are articles claiming they acually compressed Uncharted 3 so it would fit on a single disc. Sony and their fans have boasted about Bluray since this gen began. But clearly the PS3 does little to really take advantage of all that storage space. Even when it comes to games designed for the PS3.

Personally, I rather have files not as compressed as the Xbox. People need to realize when you compress something, information is ALWAYS lost. Might want to argue it isn't a lot, but that doesn't matter. Some does, and depending how much it's compressed, it might greatly effect the quality.
