hmm.. I actually don't expect them to wait that long for the release and if the rumours about that 16GB flash version are true they might even go lower than 199 in my opinion

Unless the Wii U is going to be $199.99 right out of the gate.

Wii U will not release at $200, especially when Nintendo got away with a $250 Wii and the 3DS currently retails for $160.

Yeah, I think Wii U will start with a big profit margin on each sold like the 3DS did and then they'll give it a big cut when Durango and Orbis hit shelves. So they'll start at lets say $300 and drop to maybe $229 holiday 2013. This would mean a new $199-249 PS3 model could do some damage to Wii Us $300 launch.

€dit: i just looked, 320gb ps3 is 214 euro atm on german amazon. a 16gb model could maybe go for 99 euro then.

A 320GB HDD costs like 45€ (probably more like 30-40€ for Sony as only costumer prices really rose after the Thailand floods), while 16GB of NAND-flash plus NAND-controller cost 10-15€.

So Sony can save around 20-30€ by moving to flash and you expect the console to be more than 100€ cheaper?

LOL?

A 150$ PS3 would really screw up the WiiU launch. Sony is playing this one pretty smart.

No it wouldnt... just like a super cheap 360 wont "really screw up" a WiiU launch.  The people in the market for an ultra cheap current gen consoles arent early adopters of new gen consoes.

Some very, very odd thinking from quite a few posts in this thread...

Really screw up? Nah. They'd certainly have some affect though.

Would depend on Wii U launch price/games. A dirt cheap 360/ Kinect would take away a fair bit in America and same for the PS3 in Europe. Japans gonna be all 3DS...

IF the 16GB rumors are true then I think

16GB - $149
250GB - $199
320Gb + Game = $250

:) good times ahead me think

@Ethomaz: gotcha..makes sense.

That price point looks very likely. A 16 GB model at $199 wouldn't make sense. Specially because a 16 GB PS3, with all the mandatory game installs and patchs, would be a big problem. So, at least, it have to be way cheaper.

I'm an early adopter of the PS3 and 360. I don't have a 360 anymore and I want a Wii U. I'd probably go for 360 again instead of the Wii U if the price went down to £150 compared to Wii U's £250-300 tag.

Point is there are people who have 1 of the 2 HD consoles and would of got the Wii U, but would be willing to get the other HD console if the price went low enough instead of a new system. And also game consoles will be on people's mind around christmas, are little Timmy's mummy and daddy gonna get him a $300 Wii U or a $200 PS3? It would far from destroy the Wii U's launch, but it could cause some damage.
