Forums - Sony - Gaikai Tech Isn't PlayStation Only. Sony Wants to Expand It.

Sony recently bought Gaikai, an online cloud gaming service. The purchase might do more than offer a window into the PlayStation 4. It's also a sign of things to come for Sony's non-gaming products.

"It's recognition on Sony's part that the cloud and cloud streaming technologies are going to have profound and possibly a very positive impact on not only our game business, but also in the way our consumers interact with and obtain content in general," said House.

So, Sony televisions, computers, tablets, and cell phones all sound like potential homes for Gaikai. First up, Sony plans to use the streaming service with the PlayStation, but House did not give specifics as to when that will commence.

The best thing about game streaming is that we can have all these nice cloud pictures in our articles.

I guess this is kinda like Microsoft's acquisition of Skype. They didn't make it exclusive to M$ platforms, either. To be honest, I don't know what Microsoft accomplished by buying Skype. Of course, it seems that Sony is going to keep thisversion of tech exclusively on Sony platforms, though.

This was a very smart move by Sony. Showing that maybe they can turn things around for the entire company...of course they spent almost $400 million dollars...maybe not.

Expand? All they offer at the moment is demos. Doing anything else would be expanding.

I wonder if they're going to attempt to compete directly with OnLive. Allowing people to play Playstation games alone would give them a huge edge.

I used Gaikai yesterday and tested out Mass Effect 3 demo, it worked surprisingly well. I mean I tried onlive before and I wasn't impressed, 480p video stream, artifacts, etc. But Mass Effect 3 was pretty clear, it was consistent, and I didn't notice any input lag. Perry might have been on to something here with the technology. I'll try it again streaming from my computer to the T.V. later to see how it looks.
