Forums - Gaming - Why is 'milking' considered inherently bad amongst gamers?

urban dictionary....really? There is no official definition for the word and there are many interpretations of it. This thread covers a specific interpretation, which I've clarified in the OP. (Actually, I think its the first sentence.) I'm not saying my interpretation is correct, none are, I'm just using the word to describe the phenomenon that I wish to discuss.

@UD. Yup.

@Your definition, which is BS: nobody complained about the non-definition you originally offered, why in the world would they?

I personally haven't seen people complaining on the release of a new entry in a series that is a fully new and legitimate entry with enough changes or new plot items to make it legit.

I haven't.

well I guess you haven't. Not sure what I should say here...

I came in here to back up my love of milk and breasts.

My body is ready.

EDIT: *Reads through thread* Wait, what the hell's going on in here...oh... *backs out slowly*

Ultimately what you need to realize is that it's a judgement call. What one person considers a legit entry another may consider milking due to the amount of value added from one entry to the other.

The issue may be that you don't agree with their judgment call. HTH

I don't have an issue with any thing, I was just curious about other peoples opinion on the matter.

The term "milking," I believe, has always been used in a demeaning fashion towards video game series that release sequels often. I've never heard someone say "milking" in a passive or positive fashion. Even the most "passive" ones contain a hint of spite in them.

As far as why people don't like it:

1) Over saturating the market. Many consumers don't feel the need to upgrade to the newest edition if there isn't a lot of content that makes the new edition worthwhile to them. They then might be upset that the developers didn't take longer to evolve the series more, or might simply be upset because they feel a need to have the latest game in the series even if they don't truly want it. They could also just not like the series in general and hate how it sells so well with each rendition, subsequently using the term "milking" in a very despising way. Shit.. I do that with Call of Duty and I'll admit it.

2) I felt like putting a 2 here so I could have a numbered list.

milking isn't exactly limited to video games. Movies, tv shows, animes and even music can be milked

This is how I feel for a franchise I want Mass Effect to continue but wise guy once said a great series is one that end. Looking at you George Lucas. However video games are different since gameplay is what matters.

Generally when the quality starts going down, but also too much of something good can be bad.

COD is an example of a game that's declined in quality as the series has moved on (it's still not bad though)

FIFA is an example of a game that's gotten better over time but I don't buy them every year, because it's too much. By the the time FIFA 13 rolls around I'll just be done with FIFA 12, and won't feel like playing a football game for a while.

Because people like to talk thrash about products that thrive that they in most cases don't like.

In some instances it's a justifieable term though.

Don't really see the problem with most games though, Halo, Mario, Ratchet & Clank are all "milked", yet they're consistently among the best in the business.

THIS IS THE REAL ANSWER

And again, I'm not talking about when milking causes a quality diminish. Obviously its okay to dislike those cases. I'm talking about milking in general. Gamers tend to absolutely hate milking as if it absolutely causes a quality drop in every case. Of course, that's not true, so why do gamers absolutely hate milking, even when the quality stays high.

It need not be a case where quality diminishes, but a case where little value is added with the same quality. This applies to GH.

As such, it's just as bad.
