Forums - PC - Piracy Makes CoD4 Devs Sad

I would like to say that where it concerns the music industry I actually have less sympathy.  The pirating in that industry had a lot more to do with them failing to move into a viable market before smart individuals figured it out.  In fact I would go so far as to say that the reason piracy is mainstream today is due to them dragging their feet in regards to getting into MP3 download services.  People turned to it because they wanted it and the fact that it was free was secondary for a lot of people.

Piracy would be a negligable minority if not for this early mainstreaming of the affair.

To be clear that doesn't justify pirating, but it does give me pause before I get all teary eyed over lost music revenue from an industry I still think is way way overpriced.

The effects of pirating games and software aren't 100% for the worse, no.

But in general, I think we'd be a lot better off without piracy.

And I can understand piracy in countries where the prices are ridiculous...but most pirates I talk to are in the US, Europe, Korea, etc, and there's really no personal excuse to pirate if you live in such a country.

Well if you live at or near the poverty line I could see it.

It's worth noting that the vast majority of piraters are not in North America. Most of them come from Korea.

No matter what dev's come up with, pirates are rarely more than a small step behind. The longest it has ever taken to crack a game is either Half-Life 2 or Bioshock, can't remember which.

Splinter Cell 3 took over a year to crack. Those two games don't even come close to the longest (both within a week).

A week?!?! Are you crazy? No, no. Bioshock took nearly three weeks, and (thanks to Steam) Half-Life 2 nearly a month or so. How do I know? I waited for them... I ended up buying HL2 though, but Bioshock is not worth the purchase imo.

Bioshock was released 2007-08-21:

2007-08-31   PC Game ISOs   BioShock 2K Games

Halflife 2 was released 2004-11-16:

2004-11-20   PC Game Dox   Half-Life 2 VALVe *PROPER* *OFFLINE NOSTEAM*

Source: nforce

These are non-nuked releases. So I was out by 3 days for Bioshock. But as I said, Halflife 2 and Bioshock are far from the longest games to be cracked.

Meh what bugs me is when the Anti-piracy software screws up your computer. I had one game like that "Superpower 2".

It's a GREAT game, geo-political simulator... but it has an anti-piracy program on it that slows down and screws up you CD burner, which you know has plenty of legal applications. Apparently causes all sorts of other problems too.

I own it and i'd consider downloading the pirated version just so i wouldn't have the malware copy protection on my new computer!

Fortunatly most anti-piracy progams they use now are way better. In fact you don't notice they're running anymore.

Trackmania is Starforce protected. First version was screwing everyone's PC but now with Trackmania United there is no issue with anyone.

Btw: didn't mention that Trackmania United is very good, try the free game nation to check it out.

While I'd look the other way if someone at the poverty line downloaded games...it's still stealing, and just because you're poor doesn't give you the right to steal.  I can't afford a new PC game all the time...there's games I want to play, but can't buy because I have other financial priorities.  That doesn't mean I download the game...that means I save money and wait til later.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Trackmania's pretty sweet...are the games that cost money that much better? The game frustrated me, but in a good way.

If you lived below the poverty line, you shouldn't reallybe buying computers capable of running all of the latest games. Gaming shouldn't be your priority.

CoD4 made so much money on the consoles its crazy, so they don't deserve to complain. Their PS3 version is also so screwy its insane, ever since the last server update the amount of people complaining on their sites has more then doubled. The PS3 version has also suffered from so many bugs it is crazy.

But since the last server update the amount of lag has doubled even on games where everyone has perfect pings, the lag is also affecting the better players more, there are reports of people going from 3+ kill death ratio to under 2.5 in the last week. The noobs also seem to have an increase in their hit detection boxes where they are getting kills on non moving targets when they are not even aiming at them.

The week before the update i was averaging a kill death ratio of over 5 and now my K/D is averaging 1.5. A one burst shot to the chest with an M16 is what is needed to kill a guy, but now its taking over 5 burst shots to get a kill, players are also getting knife kills across the room, you can see this on the killcams.

To the people complaining about piracy i want to know if you have ever downloaded any music off the net or any other files that are not free.

Most of the people that pirate games would not be willing to pay for it even if the option of illegally downloading it wasn't there.

I also might be inclined to feel a bit more sorry for him if CoD4 hadn't shifted 5m units on consoles alone, despite being little more than a graphical upgrade of previous instalments (admittedly it is damn good though).

That really is no excuse. If you don't pay for it you shouldn't get to enjoy it. Why are the people that pirate it special and get to play the game for free over those people that actually pay for the game?

If they really want to play the game they'll pay for it, otherwise, get the fuck out.

amen. If we could get anything we wanted for free, there would be no one left working to get money and no one left to make new stuff (no new video games o_O) and we'd all be screwed. you gotta work for the sweet stuff in life.
