They purposely (or at least they said it was on purpose--could have been hardware limitations or the day) said that it was more fun to just swing on webs without having to worry about what the web was actually attached to. They said it was more like the comics. I didn't mind. I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of things to dislike about this game but worrying about what my webs are actually attached to when I'm swinging is probably not going to be very high on my list of gripes. |
It's not simply the fact of where the webs attach. It's the fact that it totally alters what should be the core gameplay mechanic in a spider-man game. The thing that diffentiates him from other heroes. In SM2 swinging from webs was a skill. Something to be mastered. So many things mattered. It was in and of itself massively rewarding. Simply travelling between missions you could feel yourself getting better at it. Not just because of upgrades but because you were learning how to use momentum better, make your web shorter by catching it on the corner of a building, using combinations of wall runs, charged jumps and swinging to quickly climb buildings etc. It was an incredibly deep game mechanic that made simply being in an open world city fun. No longer was the open world just a way to get between the actual interesting gameplay bits. It was the interesting bit.
Whereas if it is simply ''Hold R trigger and you will travel forward'' Then there isn't anything to learn and get better at. It is simply a mode of transport and not even an exciting one! It is basically driving only with no traffic to avoid. Not only this but we get a web rush where we simply select a location click a single button and you are there...... well okay I guess but there is basically no gameplay to that.
For me a spider-man game that doesn't place importance on the web swinging is like an action game (DMC, GoW, Bayonetta etc) that doesn't place importance on the combat. Sure the rest of the game might be good but what's the point?
Depressingly though the reason why we don't get the good method is very clear. It was hard. I remember SM2 offered a simplfied version (I think instead of having to press R for each web it was simply hold it). Then Ultimate spider-man made it a little easier and also added a double jump so you could correct yourself if you made mistakes. Then SM3 made it so momentum was far less important, the web was still attaching to a building but it wasn't impacting gameplay anywhere near as much. Then they basically got rid of it all together.
