I pretty much agree. While I do think this generation is still fantastic, I think that the better graphics capabilities we get, the more Hollywood-like games will become. So therefore I think this trend with the combo of huge budget + cinematic gameplay will only be worse with next gen.
I really want the middle ground to survive. The $10 to $20 million budget games that are niched at hardcore gamers who put gameplay first. Projects that know from the start that they have a clear upper limit for sales. They don't dream of becoming the next big thing, they know can't sell more than 1-2 million, perhaps 3 million, but that's fine.
Games like Dark Souls, Deus Ex, Silent Hill, Prey 2, Dishonored, Dead Island, XCOM.
With the pressure from publishers to become the next big thing, many game series have been adapted to a broader audience but with the price of lacking gameplay. They've been given bigger budgets but forced to become more "accessible" and cinematic.
Examples of this are Tomb Raider, Far Cry, Splinter Cell, Dead Space, Resident Evil, Castlevania, Dragon Age (but it thankfully failed miserably) and Elder Scrolls.
