It will, maybe by the end of next year.

Also, didn't Sony say the PS1 shipped 120m or so?

Let say 8M for 1.5 years... With 50k sales every week, DQX, and price cut? It could be.

How many people out there that actually still want a Wii thinks hmm $150 with a free game is to expensive compared to $100 and a free game.

At this price point I can't see it being a big deal.

So I guess you missed how many Walmart sold last holiday with the BLUE $99 no bundled game sold?

I guess normal colors with bundled MK and other games won't do anything at that price....

I believe they sold out within an hour. That's pretty damn good.

Is the blue wii backwards compatible with gamecube?  I think you can get them on ebay.

Considering Nintendo's tendency to discontinue their consoles so quickly after introducing new hardware I would guess that the Wii will fail to surpass the PS1.

My guess is Wii will stick around for a while though.

An $80 price cut brought the 3DS close to the DS and Nintendo won't go much lower.

But if the Wii U is $300 at launch and the Wii is $99.99, I see the two co-existing for a while. That's a large disparity in price, even if Nintendo were forced to cut the price of Wii U to $250 or even $220.

Don't think so, sadly. But if people wanted BC with the GC, they'd either already have a Wii, or a Gamecube anyway.

Your numbers are off. The PS1 sold 102.49m.

It is not possible for the Wii to not outsell it, even if it is discontinued early next year.

Yea, according to Wikipedia it sold 102.5m. Wii is at 96.25m...But on VGC PS1 is at 104.25...which is wrong. Sony gave detailed shipment numbers here: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps_e.html

So 102.5m - ~96.25m leaves 6.26m consoles for Wii to surpass PS1. It has been 5 years and 7 months since Wii launched up to today.

In the same comparable time for the PS1 (5 years, 7 months), it sold ~74m  up to that  point (starting from the Dec 1994 Japanese launch...as opposed to the Sep 1995 in America) WORLDWIDE. That mark was around July 3rd, 2000. By March 31st, 2005, it was officially done selling another unit ;'(. At the PS2 launch (March 2000), it was at ~72.5m sold.

So, from July 2000 to April 2005 (4 years, 9 months), the PS1 managed to sell 28.5 million more units, 30m if you go back to March 2000 when its successor launched.

I highly doubt the Wii cannot reach another 10m in comparison. I would check N64 & GC post launch numbers, but VGC has deleted all the data and chart functionality necessary to do that ages ago.
