The wifi removal from PSP was only in the Europe model that was super cheap. 3000 is still default model.

A disc less digital only PS3 is possible. They wouldn't even have to have hard drives larger that what they use now but I would just release a 320 gb version. The PS Store has been getting titles day 1 and with the instant game collection Sony is almost screaming that they are going to do this. The current PS3 model will still be available side by side so people can choose. I don't know what pricing would be but the $200 mark is right there. It would also be best if it was bundled with 3 months or a year of PS Plus so buying the system comes with 12 free games.

As the price of the PS3 drops the need to have backwards compatibility in the PS4 becomes less. Remember when the PS3 slim luanched with a $100 price drop? The PS2 was only $100 so even though people were upset it wasn't packaged in, it didn't cost anything more and the slim had a larger hard drive and used less energy.

Sony wouldn't save much, if anything by taking out blu-ray film support as it will just be a liscensing thing (which I think Sony may be part of anyway, which is why I am unsure if it would be zero or slim savings)

They could take out the disc drive altogether and have DL only, It would take a while to DL games that size though.

Yeah, probably. The PS2 was constantly being revised as well, I think they started to use internal AC power or something, making it even cheaper to produce.

Besides, we have a PS3 slim, but they haven't announced the PSThree yet! Then again, why do such a revision now when PS4 is ~1,5 years away.

Sony is not going to try a Discless PS3 sku. It actually wouldn't save them much and would actually cost them money because it would sell like crap. The PSP-GO was just an experiment to test the waters, that's why the Vita added back the physical media. PS4 will likely include a 6x BR drive (Min) so installs are not mandatory but optional.

$129 is wishful thinking. The PS3 will likely become a PSN+ server side cloud based service on the PS4 before that happens. Old PS3 games won't play directly in the disk drive, but they'll still be playable on the PS4 through SCE servers.

It's not the optical drive that costs more money currently; the HDD, regardless of size, is a more expensive component, and would be the real barrier in selling a HDD equipped console profitably for under $150.

PS2: no HDD. Cheap. Xbox 360 4GB: no HDD. Cheap. Wii: no HDD. Cheap.

At 129 I may even replace my ps3. It is the original model and I am sentimentally attached to it though. My last repair of the blue ray disc cost 200, more than the price in this thread.
