Not suprised. They have no reason to sell at a loss. They make an affordable product that people want. ONe the best things i like about nintendo is that they don't sell it at a loss. Its one of the biggest things i dislike about sony and microsoft.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo would sell it for a small loss. It would be a small price to pay for maximizing their year headstart.
In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.
I could easily see this system selling at $299 and make a profit.
Since Reggie's comment about the price, I think the price would be between 299-350$, including a game bundled (NintendoLand). I don't see Nintendo selling the system at a loss, it's not in their DNA lol

Unless they do it will not last. I don't know why they don't make their consoles upgradable likee the pc, add more ram, etc. I put a 500g disk in my PS3. i don't think they know the market that well (gamecube), and just got lucky with the Wii. It won't last. I suspect they will stick to what they know, even though they got mounds of cash in the bank, and won't sell at a loss. |
....what? You do realise that out of Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft that Nintendo have been the ones in the console business the longest, made the most profit etc etc. Even since the PS1/N64 era when Sony were 'dominating' Nintendo has remained the most profitable.
Of all the console makers the one we can state knows the market best is Nintendo. I believe last year was in fact their first annual loss in the company's 100year+ history. So how does that even equal 'running at a loss for some time now''?
Also what does being able to upgrade a PS3 HDD have with making consoles able to have more RAM? One is simply storage that only affects your system. The other is something that would mean developers had to adapt games for two configurations etc. They tried that with the N64 and it's RAM pak and it didn't work out so well.
Honestly I think all the console makers should sell their hardware at a profit or at the very least a minimal loss. Sony made such massive losses with the PS3 in those early years that even by the end of this generation they won't have recouped them. I believe MS might be in the same boat but don't know their figures well enough. With Sony it was mostly to get Blu-ray successful. Which worked. Of course whether it would have regardless of the PS3 though is always a possibility. Either way the profits were going to a different division.
So yea Nintendo should sell at a profit, which should be easier with a pack in game if they go that route. And MS and Sony really should sell at a profit too or at least sell at a small enough loss that the sales of just a couple of games can make them break even.
| osed125 said: According to Nintendo designer Katsuya Eguchi, the company doesn’t want to sell the Wii U at a loss when the console launches later this year. Usually, when new consoles launch, their hardware is very powerful and advanced, which makes it quite expensive. Therefore, the console is initially sold at a loss, and money is made in the long run. For example, when the PlayStation 3 launched, it cost Sony over $800 to make a PS3 console, while it cost $500 for consumers. The Wii U is far from a very advanced machine compared to current generation consoles, and Nintendo hasn’t sold console hardware at a loss for a long time, both the Wii and GameCube were profitable from day one. And it looks like the Wii U will be profitable for the company on day one as well. Speaking to GameTrailers, Eguchi said, “We would like to avoid taking a loss on the hardware, so we are gonna be seriously considering how it is priced”. Lately, there have been many rumors suggesting Wii U prices anywhere from the very high end of $399 to the lower ends of $199. Nintendo has been losing money over the past few years, and its share price has equally diminished since the Wii reached its peak a few years ago. With a successful E3 behind them, Nintendo now has a tough job ahead to figure out the right balance between a launch price that will appear to as many gamers as possible, and a price that would ensure the profitability of the console. Microsoft and Sony will almost certainly lower the price of their consoles as a respond to the Wii U when it launches. This will make the Wii U launch price even more important. For a site which I presume is Nintendo-centric, they certainly haven't bothered to do even rudimentary research...

i could see two different skews. one with the wii U gamepad and one without. ..but it would probably be more like $250 and $350.
If they don't want to lose money or lose as little as posible, they may have 2 options:
1-Launch the console without a game for 249/299 € losing little money but making it back thanks to people buying NintendoLand because it's like the new WiiSports.
2-Launch the console with NintendoLand bundled in for 299/349 € with a nice profit.
Please excuse my bad English.

The headline is misleading (same thing at GAF) he is saying they would like to. Doesn't mean that will be the end result
