Forums - Gaming - Cliff hopes Unreal Engine 4 graphics are so good people claim they’re faked

BeefJack

Cliff Bleszinski of Epic Games has been discussing what he hopes can be achieved visually from a combination of their upcoming Unreal Engine 4 and the next generation of console hardware.

“I’m hoping that when gamers get a first glimpse at a next generation Unreal Engine 4 title that they’ll see something that looks darn near if not [actually] rendered,” Epic’s design director said. “I’m hoping that there will be debates online with people claiming that footage from the game was faked.”

“That was actually the target goal for the current generation of consoles, and as we’ve seen with a lot of pre-rendered graphics i.e. a Blizzard cinematic, you’re like ‘Well actually consoles can’t quite render that yet’. We’re hoping to get right to that point.”

“Even in the current console generation of the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, the best looking titles.. you can still look at them and they kind of have this ‘gamey’ look to them, maybe a little pixel shimmer here and there, or the lighting doesn’t look right to you because we as humans know what good lighting looks like even if we can’t explain it,” he told GI in a video interview.

“I’m hoping with Unreal Engine 4 and whatever the next generation ends up being – depending on the spec – that we’ll get to the point where everything just looks right and looks real.”

Until then, Epic are keep in themselves busy with their latest project, as you find out  with all the Gears of War: Judgment news here at BeefJack.

Once again Cliff, you fail to make me care, first you wanted Avatar in real time if I remember correctly...

I don't think anyone thinks this is out of their expectations?

Just watched the Unreal 4 video...

Honestly. It doesnt look anything beyond say... World of Warcraft. WoW trailers are spectacular, graphically. Same could be said of SE'S new engine.

Very misleading. When they show real gameplay, thats when they can impress me. Do what Ubisoft did with Watch_Dogs.

Show real gameplay. I was disappointed.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Big difference. The UE4 demo was real time

I hope so too Cliffy, I hope so too!

I don't think the best games for next gen will be quite as good as the average CGI though.

Wow.....I hope whoever wrote that doesn't have English as their main language.

So was the Luminous Engine Tech Demo from SquareEnix and it looked far superior.
Especially cause it looked more realistic...Unreal Engine 4 again aims at the same style as the UE3...Cold,hard and plastic looking stuff.
The Luminous Engine had a much warmer feeling and you could see soft patterns and life in the whole presentation.Especially the emotions were awesome in the Luminous Tech Demo. You could feel and see them.

I think Unreal Engine 4 will be again only used for the same stuff like the UE3.
Gorillas on steroids,"manly" and muscular shooting stuff and all that things i don't care about. The best thing the UE3 had was Tera Online cause it didn't look like all the other games...No difference between  Gears,Mass Effect or any other UE3 games. All looked the same and except Tera all had the same Character concept/style(with the unrealistic people that should display manly 40 year old males)
For now its for me the worst Engine out of the Next Gen Engines...CryEngine 3,Frostbyte 2,Luminous and probably the Fox Engine will probably all look much more realistic and could be used for EVERY genre without looking the same.
Biggest issue with UE3 - Everything looked the same...Maybe they fixed the Oil tears with the UE4 but i don't think so if you look at the Lava in that trailer/Demo.
