Forums - Gaming - What real 'next gen' is there actually in the Wii U...?!

Edit: Sorry, wrong thread.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Wow! That was a great article!

Even if I wasn't a fan of Pikmin I would try to pick it up due to your writings on it!

Thank you, good sir  That's the highest praise a writer can receive.

It really was excellent.  A lot of fun, and tied with Zombi U for my most-anticipated Wii U title.  By the way, I'll also be posting up previews for the multiplayer of that, as well as other Wii U titles like Wii Fit U, Just Dance 4, Sports Connection, and a couple of others relatively soon.

Great!

I'm certainly going to try to read those. Looking forward to them. :D

And you are quite welcome!

The Wii U certainly has enough going on that when developers start using it more efficiently it will be able to provide much better looking games than the PS3/360. The big question really is how many developers outside of Nintendo will?

Well, if you recall, Nintendo consulted third parties when designing the WiiU. They went out of their way to ask a variety of third-party developers what they wanted in a system to develop for and why they didn't develop more for the Wii. They built not only the dev kits, the controllers, and the graphical power, but also the actual interior structure itself (ie, everything you mentioned in that third part of your post) according to the requests of third parties.

I think a large number of them will be using the efficiency capabilities of the Wii. I know for a fact that EA and Ubi are going to, anyways. If we can get Namco, 2k, and anybody that likes to be published by any of the previous four companies involved, I'll at least be a more-than happy-enough camper.

The thing is though I think there is a big difference between 3rd parties saying what they would like to see and actually using the system. The features were implemented to make multiplatform titles easier. Not necessairly to allow devs to fully utilize the hardware. We are still in launch so it's too early to tell but certainly no games were taking advantage of the changes. I suspect any multiplatform games won't really take advantage of it.

Also I'm not sure what exactly is going on but there is something very weird at the moment with 3rd parties and Wii U. For example last year EA made a BIG deal of how much they were going to support it..... and this year at E3? Nothing. I think there was a brief mention that a madden title would come to Wii U. Likewise It is well known that Black Ops 2 is already running on Wii U.... but nothing was said. Skylanders is in development for it but just got a very small mention etc.

I have heard rumours that Nintendo are holding a separate event just for Nintendo stuff later this year so maybe they want to hold things back until then? Who knows.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

How readily people seem to neglect the fact that this device has 3x the memory of either PS3 or 360. Let's only look at the numbers that make the system look bad

We are trying to discuss the Wii U, logic is stricly forbidden =P

Honestly in terms of raw power the Wii U probably will end up closer to 360/PS3 than 720/PS4. However the Wii U has quite a lot of features that could make it's games look closer to those of the PS4/720 than the 360/PS3.

The Gpu is much more modern and has some added on features we don't fully know about yet. The memory has increased enough to provide a nice bump in textures. The dedicated audio dsp will mean that the cpu doesn't have to handle it. The tesselation unit will provide a nice visual bump (I believe the 360 did have one but it was almost never used and quite insubstantial).

The Wii U certainly has enough going on that when developers start using it more efficiently it will be able to provide much better looking games than the PS3/360. The big question really is how many developers outside of Nintendo will?

P.S. As an aside and to kinda help pokeclaudel (EDIT:Sorry there Nintendopie lol. Was looking at quotes and got mixed up) out I will post a screenshot of SMG2 being run in HD on the dolphin. Keep in mind the game itself looks the same (textures, effects etc) only in HD. Although I don't actually agree with his point that SMG1 looked as good as anything out at the time on 360/PS3 (it didn't). I will say though that the SMG games being run in HD (not something the Wii itself was capable of) could probably pass as 360/PS3 games. Just not high production value ones

Isn't that screenshot from Dolphin emulator? I have it and Nintendo games look crazy good on it. Try F-Zero GX and Windwaker, they look like current gen games.

Its release date.

When Mario Galaxy came out it looked on par with any Xbox or Ps3 game on the market at the time. Even the early tech demo of Zelda looks better then most PS3 title now. I guarantee that by the time PS4 comes out Nintendo games will be looking just as good as early next gen titles.

this

sure you can't call the graphics next gen, not yet, but i don't believe developers and Nintendo managed to ulitize the 100% graphics of WiiU from now, and judging from early Wii games to latest Wii games, i think WiiU current games definitely look like Ps3/Xbox360 latest games, and Pikmin 3 looks even better to me
the networking could be next gen? the gameplay, maybe yes maybe not, but it's definitely something new

also, i couldn't notice a huge difference from ps2 graphics in early ps3 games, but now obviously...

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Being a PC Gamer, i never have to wonder about next gen ;)

That's nice. It also has nothing to do with the topic.

Let's not let this get derailed.
