Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Has 8 GB of Internal Storage

Black Ops DLC is ~7GB. Come on Nintendo HDD's aren't expensive !

personally I wish next gen had no hdds, it would mean developers would complete games and not milk us with DLC.

and it would stop lazy developers storing huge amounts of files on your hdd to optimise the game. Look at nintnedo games, their loading is seemingless. look at some of the third part stuff, using good old checkpoints to buffer.

the ps3 has shown me that HDD in the system will only be suffice with a 1TB drive. with the way gaming is moving, becoming a digital box for media including music, videos and games, my 320gb ps3 is 20 gigs from full, and 90% of that is all games.
so whether nintendo gives me 8gb, 160 or 500, its not going to be enough in the long haul, thus sony continued to release ps3s with bigger drives each year. There fore, being that almost every pc owner has (or should own) an external HDD, nintendo doesnt need to raise the cost on the system to provide me a HDD.

Exactly, heck if you fill up that first HD, add a different one, you would hopefully be able to just change which one is plugged in (maybe even multiple drives).

the big question is will the system have a limitation on what size drives it will support, as the original post stated.

I was hoping for a bit more than that, but it isn't terribly bad. As long as we have options to add more in the future everything should be fine. The real question is whether to get a very large SD card or a hard drive?

Nintendo still doomed?
Feel free to add me on 3DS or Switch! (PM me if you do ^-^)

A 500gb hard drive would work out way cheaper than 500gb in SD cards, so get a portable HD :)

I agree with the following posts, under these conditions.
Nintendo has to make sure of two things in order for this to be deal:

  1. The OS has to be completely indifferent to the location of any software and data. None of this SD card Channel crap! All installed apps and data should be accessed in an identical manner with the only possible exception being optical media.
  2. Nintendo has to mandate a minimum standard for access time and data-transfer rates across all external storage, so that the user experience is fluid and consistent, and more importantly so devs are guaranteed there is absolutley no difference between running from disc and running from storage.

As long as they get these two things done perfectly, we should all be fine with having 8GB on board flash.
Remember, when Xbox 3 and PS4 launch in 2014 they will either follow a similar path or offer multiple SKUs like they did this gen. Certainly we can all agree that purchasing a separate HD is cheaper than a 1st party product. Also remember that a dollar spent on external storage by the console manufacturer is a dollar less they can spend on all other components which are much more difficult to replace mid-generation.

Some of you are crazy.

This is a perfect solution and THE best option for consumers.

MOST people won't need more than 8GB and already have quite a few SD cards laying around or would be happy with buying an $10 16GB SD card to pop in there.

Those that will want more storage are by far in the minority and will have no issues spending $50 or a large usb HDD (up to 1TB probably for that price).

This way Nintendo can keep costs low, increase the lifespan of the WiiU, reduce its size, reduce it heat/noise levels, etc etc.

I am really happy with this solution. Especially if WiiU has connectivity to my PC like my PS3 does.... then it really doesn't matter as all my large media content will simply be streamed from the PC to the WiiU. Videos take up the most space anyways.

However if it is possible to hook up an external HDD and use ALL the data from the WIi U to there (not that music and movie file crap that PS3 has) then that would be the best and disregard the last paragraph

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Well its double then what the $199 xbox 360 offers. Maybe nintendo felt since alottt if people pick up the $199 xbox then storage isnt as big of a deal. So i partially blame MS for this lol

It seems Nintendo's trying their best to shoo off Third party developers.
This is terrible , Nintendo fans deserve to play the great multiplatform games, I've been excited most about this console for that main reason, to see what Nintendo fans input on some Multiplatform games.

I think this is very good. Faster loading time, maybe better graphics in the future etc..
