Forums - Gaming - Sony – our competitors “are losing the plot” with gamers

Sony’s head of digital games, Jack Buser, is of the opinion the firm’s console rivals “lost the plot,” during E3 as the event is more about showing great games than trying to “legitimize themselves in the non-game entertainment space.”

Speaking in an interview with VentureBeat, Buser felt Sony did a “very good job of drawing a solid line in the sand,” at E3, proving to the community that when it comes to entertainment, Sony is “for gamers.”

“We are for the gamer first and foremost,” he said. “Everything we do at PlayStation, we ask ourselves first, what’s right for the gamer? And at our press conference, we really stood up and put both our hands in the air and said, look, we are for gamers first and foremost. While some of our competitors, seemingly, are losing the plot, forgetting what built this industry. It was the gamer. We remain incredibly focused on the gamer, and our press conference really drove that home.

Buser said first-party titles such as Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls are just two examples of experiences gamers want, and are “pushing what a console game can be to the next level.” Anything not included as part of the gaming space, such as Netflix, Amazon Video and the like, are just an added bonus from a company gamers and those confident in Sony products receive as part of the PlayStation experience.

“It’s not yet another rehash of the same old thing, these are truly innovative, genre-breaking experiences that can only be found on PlayStation,” he said. “Everything we’re doing is for the gamer first and foremost, and I think that… I was proud to be a PlayStation employee at this E3.

“You will see other companies really spend a lot of time and energy trying to legitimize themselves in the non-game entertainment space, because it’s not part of their company’s DNA. Nor do customers trust that they can bring that type of entertainment to the living room or on the go. With the Sony brand behind a PlayStation, our customers intuitively know that non-game entertainment is a core part of our DNA.

“We’re seeing other companies spend a lot of time and energy trying to legitimize themselves in the space, and unfortunately what happens is they can very quickly lose the plot with gamers. That’s quite dangerous. That’s why we at PlayStation very much put the gamer first and foremost. We are interested in bringing the kinds of non-game entertainment to the PlayStation that our gamers expect to see. That’s why you see services like Hulu and Amazon Instant Video deploying on PlayStation 3 first.”

I'm trying to sequence the Playstation DNA, this helps quite a bit.

i wonder, and this for some years now, why sony always has to talk about the competition. i don't see microsoft talking a lot about sony or nintendo talking about sony.

If this whole thing is them saying that they have been the best this E3 then I'm not surprised...

Sony wasn't the "Knight in Shining Armour" this E3. I don't know why they would try to say they are. However, almost anything is better than Usher, and Usher wasn't at Sony's E3 Conference.

Due to connection issues, I missed the way Usher was introduced on stage, was it a game related thing or just an interlude?

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

sure, it was for dance central 3 and in the backround you saw the dance central figures move like usher and his dancers in the foreground. i still don't understand why everyone has a problem with that, same with the wonderbook for sony, it is to get more people purchasing a console and as example i saw a report on german tv yesterday about exactly that, dance central 3 and usher on the microsoft conference. did they talk about halo or last of us? no they didn't... same with wonderbook, it is meant for people who weren't interested in the console yet. i see nothing bad to show this on the conference.

sure we don't want to see that (i like dance central a lot but i don't need usher on the stage) but they don't make a conference only for internet gaming nerds when they can reach many more people with a conference and a jk rowling book game or usher. i can't criticize a company for doing something which is good for them just because i don't ike to see it.

WONDERBOOK!

Lots of PR fluff and BS that I won't bother scrutinizing, but I will say I generally agree with his sentiment. Sony definitely drew a firm line in their goals in the industry. They couldn't hope to continue competing directly against Microsoft as MS pushed more for multimedia connectivity, so Sony started back-peddling a while ago into a straight-on "games!" direction, in hopes of carving out their niche and building from there.

That being said, while I appreciate it as a gamer (as I don't care at ALL for multimedia stuff - that's why I own a goddamn PC), I definitely think Microsoft is taking the better business route, and I worry about Sony being able to grow and reach out more.

This my friends is why Sony is losing the plot with gamers. The most popular games in the world are the kind of games and gamers that Sony don't seem to be interested in. They are a hardcore company who makes games to serve themselves and you can really see how that kind of attitude follows through with their sales numbers and the 'relative' ineffectiveness of their first and second party studios next to their numbers and talent.

I was just thinking of this.

Sony seems to be severly inclosed. Kind of like China in ancient times, they didn't want to share or change their ways.
