Yeah, about that...

Years later it was revealed that everything was just a big misunderstanding. When Völler went down, he said: "Ich glaub' ich brauch' 'ne Bahre.", but Rijkaard thought he heard: "Spuck' mir in die Haare."

everything was ok after that reveal

I'm half russian but I don't follow them regularely, and it was a good surprise to see how they play. Very attractive attacking with fast combinations and deadly definition. If they keep playing this good they'll get the 1st position in this weak group easily!

And today, the first big match, Germany vs Portugal. I'm really looking forward to watch the german, especially if they manage to get Ronaldo angry ;)

Hello fellow VGCz's! I'm just getting ready for the Euro and nearly missed the thread. I have recently moved to the Netherlands (just one month ago) and been having fun making football snide remarks with collegues. Either way, they gave me a Dutch shirt and today I will wear the Oranje to get in spirit (tough group...). And tomorrow La Roja, down you go Italy!

This year I don't think the team will go all the way as before, maybe luck is on our side, but I'll still wear my shirt proudly.

I've been cheering for France for the past 15 years so nothing will change. Netherlands are my second favorite with Germany and Portugal being my least favorite teams. I wont make any predictions as of right now since I haven't had a chance to watch too many qualifying games.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

hey I'm also spanish (I live in Switzerland though)! I also think Spain is weaker than before, but we'll see...I only wish we can humilliate the French at some point as revenge for their "jokes" about all great spanish sportsmen taking dope...

Buenos días entonces. The problem with the team is Del Bosque, I don't like him. He was lucky enough to jump in a well-run team done up by Luis Aragonés. For this Euro, he's made some bad decisions by selecting Negredo over Adrian/Soldado or not having De Gea as a sub (for GK transition). Not really that important, but hinders the team by not selecting the best. It could also be my bias since I support At. Madrid and as you may know Del Bosque is pure Real Madrid. At least he is taking Juanfran (was very surprised). But Adrian should have been there too, he has been the best Spanish striker during the second half of the season.

Sorry excuse of a german team? Just because they played shitty doesn't mean that they still had some of the best german players of their time in the lineup. That's a pretty odd way to classifiy anything .

And yeah, I agree with you in regards to Portugal's players attitudes (as I said on my previous post too).

You are from Portugal, so you lack the direct connection to the German media I have. The Germans are usually full of themselves and this team that got beaten by Portugal was so bad that the Germans scaled back their expectations for years to come.

In 1996 they won the Euro in England. Two years later they got brutally eliminated by Croatia (0:3). In 2000 they couldn't even beat Romania and lost to a poor squad of England (who only garnered three points in that tournament; the three against Germany). That's the team you guys beat with 3:0, a team that had already lost the trust in its home country. There were no high hopes for the World Cup in 2002, Germany was incredibly happy about their second place (and they got that far because they didn't face a big team until the final). In 2004 they got eliminated again in the group stage of a Euro. In 2006 they were once again very happy about their third place. The same holds true for their results in 2008 and 2010. But now they have finally recovered. 2012 is the first time in over a decade that Germany made the title their mission.

Your win in 2000 means nothing, because the current German team is leaps and bounds better. Also, you lost the two games since then. In 2006 and 2008.

I agree that as a team, the current Germany squad is probably better than the 2000 one, as it was shown during the WC 2010 (in which they were my favourite team to go to the finals with Spain). But the 2000 squad still had some of the best german players of their time, Matthaus, Bierhoff, Ballack, Kahn, Scholl, etc.

Just because they played badly in 2000, doesn't take away the fact that they had some very good players on their team. Arrogance might have led to their poor performance, but that's not portugal's fault now is it?

If you want to go down that road, then the Euro 2008 win of Germany against Portugal meant nothing as well, because the Portuguese team was suffering a similar public downfall and complete lack of trust (our expectations were really, really low for that Euro) due to a lot of issues that came up during the qualifying stage (like Scolari's infamous punch, retirement of some of our best players like Figo and Pauleta and some extremely lackluster qualyfing games). Our Euro 2008 squad was probably our weakest in this past 12 years (even weaker than Portugal's WC 2002 squad).

This thread is nicely organized, I hope we'll also get tables for the standings of each group as the days pass by.

God some people are never happy. Fine!

Oh yes, he loves Real Madrid too much. Taking Albiol is a joke, come on. He not only sucks, but he has less practise than myself, as I play regularely with my son...I also don't like how he puts Busquets and Xabi Alonso together. Alonso is a great player, but not for the combination football we play. He also forces Xavi to play too close to the strikers, where he is far less effective than deep in the midfield. And yes he should have taken at least Soldado, or Adrian. Anything better than Negredo. I think we'll miss Villa very much. As well as Puyol. I mean Ramos and Pique are great defenders, but Ramos is going to play in the center instead of Puyol and because of that Arbeloa will be playing on the right, which is BAD.
