Forums - Sales Discussion - Prediction: The Xbox 720(?) will sell more than the PS4 and the Wii U combined

If the Wii didn't outsell ps3/xbox360 combined I have a really hard time imagining a console outselling their two competitors combined to be honest. (I know it happened during the 6th gen with ps2 but I dont think it will happen again)

I think the Xbox 720 is a safe bet. I'm pretty sure they will suceed since I think M$ is doing everything right atm IMO. They have the kinect bandwagon, insane amount of entertainment app, known for best online and I'm sure they will find a way to make their next console with the perfect balance of price and power. But don't forget that they can barely sell 1000 consoles a week in Japan, and I dont think it will change in next gen.

Wii U imo is a big ? for me and most ppl. It could do really bad or really good. I think it will do good imo. Nextbox will probably be first in NA but Wii U will probably be first in Japan. So I think it will be close between the two.

I think the Xbox 720 will be the best selling home console next generation based on the rapid growth of the Xbox brand. But outselling them both combined? Not going to happen.

Hmm it doesn't sound far fetched at all. He is using logic based on what he see. Its an interesting read and could turn out to be true. Xbox is in the best position to win the next generation. All they have to do is push japan & Europe and MS could do this easily. But im going to wait to see more info come out.

You say it like that would be easy for them. It won't. They will never be able to get Japan unless something incredibly drastic happens. Europe is a big stretch as well.

Even in the incredibly unlikely event of them coming first in all regions, how likely is it that they sell more than Wii U and PS4 COMBINED? This is just an outrageous prediction and, knowing MBP, he did it because he knew it'd be a controversial thread.

Who knows anything is possible, I don't agree on the combined prediction part but i do believe the xbox has a good shot of winning the next generation.

Guess Japan will just stop supporting Both Nintendo and Sony completely in favor of an American console.

I think the Xbox 720 will sell more than the PS4 and the Wii U combined. The reasons for this prediction are numerous...

1.) The Wii U's design is difficult for devs and so it will recieve little 3rd party support in the short run, and even less 3rd party support in the long run. Due to this lack of 3rd party support, sales will be low, and will continue to be low. This viscious circle of lack of 3rd party support and subsequent lower sales will cause the Wii U to have significantly lower sales than its predecessor.

1. I agree.

2.) The PS4 will not have the same percieved (by the general public) graphical advantage that it had over the 360 this gen, as they will release closely to each other (and therefore have similar specs). Also, if Sony postpone the release of the PS4 in order to get a graphical advantage over the 720 then this will be hugely detrimental to sales as it will give time for the 720 to establish itself in the market, so no matter which strategy they choose, they can't have the same benefit that they had in the previous gen.

2. I disagree. Look at PS360 sales per year. The PS3 wins despite the year head-start the 360 had. If PS4/720 launch near each other with similar specs and similar prices, the PS4 would win because Sony has Japan.(Europe is up for grabs, and America can always change)

3.) Tablets and smartphones are the future, and this is because consumers are looking for as much of their entertainment requirements as possible packed into one device. The Xbox 360 is currently building up a large entertainment package with apps, music, games, movies etc. and im sure they will continue this strategy into the next gen.

3. So will Sony with the PS4. In fact they are 1 step ahead of Microsoft with Music Unlimited.

4.) One of the main selling points of the PS3 was that it had internet browsing capabilities, and in the next gen both the 720 and the PS4 will come with internet browsers, but the 720's will be superior if the new IE from microsoft is all it's cracked up to be.

4. No, the PS3 web browser wasn't a main selling point of the PS3.(maybe it was for you?) If Microsoft releases a browser they'd have to stick with Internet Explorer which isn't a good thing. Sony could use Google Chrome or even Firefox. Either is a better choice than IE.(I think most would agree with me)

5.) The main selling point of the PS3 was that you didn't have to pay for online gaming like you did with the 360. Next gen though, I suspect that Sony will introduce an online fee, as they cannot repeat the same mistakes they did with the PS3 and sustain $10bn losses. This will further shift the market in support of the 720.

5. Nope. If Vita is any indication(which it is), PSN will stay free. Sony has Playstation Plus for those who want those extra but unncecessary features such as Cloud-Saving.

6.) The Xbox 720 will more likely launch at lower price point than the PS4, and with all the advantages the 720 will have over the PS4, consumers will likely choose to purchase the 720.

6. What makes you think NextBox will be cheaper? Given how much Microsoft is pushing Kinect, I'd say each NextBox will be bundled with one. So I can easily see the NextBox being the more expensive console.

7.) As companies, both Nintendo and Sony are struggling financially and so wont have the same budgetary capabilities as Microsoft have in terms of marketing.

7. I think they'll manage. Look at how Nintendo saved the 3DS.

8.) The Wii U lacks the same gimmick that the Wii had during it's launch period. When the Wii was released the controls were new and exciting and many people purchased Wii's to experience this innovation. However, the Wii U is launching with tablet technology, which is already established in the market, and so the Wii U will not benefit for the "curiosity" sales which the Wii had.

8. I think you are underestimating the popularity of tablets. This will me a major selling point for the Wii U. And who knows what else Nintendo will announce for it at E3.(Vitality Sensor anyone?)

9.) I think people will begin to get tired of the constant stream of Mario games being released, and I think the series will experience a significant decline in sales. This will cause the Wii U to lose one of its major selling points.

9. Why now? This is just wishful thinking on your part. Look at Mario Kart 3DS and then tell me that sales are in decline..

Wait till the real future unfolds what lies indeed in it...

I bet current console statistics will carry on pretty much same for the next consoles...Wii U.. Ouch!!

You got good reasons but Xbox 720 willl not sell like the Ps2.

Yay!!!

Nintendo could release anything with a year start and still outsell the 720 by a huge margin. You forget Nintendo will gain more third parties this gen combined with their own in house stuff you may find the Wii U will outsell the 720 by 2 to 1. Nintendo have way more talent under their hood than Microsoft
