well if they are using retail prices perhaps MS has worked out a deal with info sharing for a price cut, better inventory control with its partners. this would be advantages to ms in various ways, even if it meant the took in a little less up front. or they could simply be using xbla activations/use of codes and hardware showing up on live, though that would make the 36 million not on live and the peripherals not connected to the main console such as charging units harder to track.
