Huh. Weren't i5 and i7 introduced at the same time?

No, Apple introduced the i5 in 2005, and the i7 in 2007. Hence the "5" and "7."

You know when you don't know what you are talking about you probably shouldn't give advice.

I thought including Apple in that post would make it quite clear it was a joke

I guess I missed that, you never know with Apple fanboys, which I guess is the joke.... Lol Apple fanboys

From what I have read, there is no need for an i7 for gaming performance. Beyond an i5, there is very little gain, and the graphics card become the deciding factor, so I actually think that is the right CPU to choose

I am building one myself, but haven't fully decided on the build

Motherboard - a z77 one
CPU - i5-3570k
GPU - 670
RAM - 8 GB (Corsair maybe?)
Storage - HDD + SSD combo
PSU - about 650W, but enough headroom for a 2nd card
Case - Sharkoon Tauron

Any advice would be welcome

looking for quite or gaming? if quite id recomend the corsair 550D

how much do you want to spend on the mobo

get the OC asus 670 direct CU II techpower up hads a nice review on it http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GTX_670_Direct_Cu_II/

cpu as mentioned above are you not going to overclock  thats a good one if not maybe prior gen (sandy bridge) but you loose pci-e 3.x spec by going sandybridge and a few other things

PSUs spend more to go modular i did not on my first build and regretted it, but have since rectified the issue and 750 for a second card unless your looking at 7850 or less in terms of cards

RAM - dont buy patriot is all i can say i had to rma an rma from them. corsair/crucial never had an issue

ssd the samsung 830 or crucial m4, 128gb if you can find them for 120 or less (99 bucks on newegg for the m4 right now) or 256 if you can get it for 220 or less

Well I am going for power, but preferably still being quiet and my main criteria for my case is to look nice.....

I don't know how much I want to spend on the motherboard. I don't have any immediate plans to overclock, but I will definitely going for Ivy Bridge processors. The real problem is I don't know how much I need to spend, my main criteria are that it won't break, and can fit 2 graphics cards in, just in case. So I would guess it is better to go with something better just so that I can overclock if I need the extra power, rather than having to replace it in a couple of years

Back on the graphics card, I had been thinking about the ASUS, but for no particular reason other than I am familiar with the brand. The main issue is supply, as I just checked on amazon UK and it is current £450, which is way higher than my budget, so I think I will just have to see what is avaliable in a month

As for PSUs, I have heard good things about modular supplies, and I am a bit mental when it comes to cable management, so it sounds like a great idea.

Thanks for the advice!

My board was about 170 and it works perfectly fine, the part that's spendy is the CPU, and the 2 512GB M4's lol >.>;

$170 for the motherboard?

you can get cheap mobos that perform well, mine was 155  (MSI Z68MA-ED55 B3) and I have been able to OC the hell out of my cpu  it also met the port requirements/ smaller form factor that i needed at the time and where ill deploy it when i replace it. that said the two 512 m4 depending on when bought is between 1,800 to just about 1,000 more recently  DAMN SON thats going all out on storage/performance thinking about buying my second samsung 830 256gb does not seem so extravagent now

Welp. I must have looked at a different board. The One linked is socket 1155 and the 3930K is socket 2011.
Unless you edited the Op post. :P

No I haven't edited anything , I assumed you where right when you said the Gigabyte G1 Sniper 3 was socket 2011  and the i5 3570K was 1155 when it now turns out they are both 1155 . so it looks like my build was ok then , talk about confusion, stiil what about  i7 3770 k thoughts?

do you run a lot of  video editing, or anything with high levels of parallelism if so it may be worth the cost.

if your just gaming not really the i5 is a better value, that said i have a 2600k OC to 4.3 and use it to host the vgc minecraft server (i also have 32 gb of ram now but most people don't need that) and do video editing/ design work in addition to gaming on it (i was not even planing on making it a gaming box at first, but then a few games came out my laptop could not play and one thing lead to another)

the  2600K can go alot higher than 4.3 - mine will run at 5.1 with voltage tweeks and an air cooler (gets  about 85c), but to prolong life, and minimise heat since i moved it to a silent case 4.3 is with no voltage tweek

No not much video editing in the profesional sense anway , so i will most likely get the i5 3570K with the G1 Sniper 3 I really like that Mobo .

rock will make an awesome combo... ive been looking at that mobo too, its an e-atx form factor (closer to ceb really) and i think its just too big for my case by 1/5 an inch and will cut off access to the sata ports its 12" x 10.39" for it vs 12.0" x 9.6" for normal atx

I have a massive  server case that used to house a large form factor  Mobo with room to spare sitting empty it was given to  me by a friend who owns a PC gaming centre so I'll try that .

i would spend extra cash on a modular power supply the ax850 if you can find it on sale or the tx850m which is fairly new.I would have sid the h100 is over kill but given ivy bridge runs hotter it might be needed i get a long with an oc in the 4.6 range with a hyper 212+ and 2 fans and stay 60c

GRAPHICS CARD - ASUS GTX 680 Direct CU II TOP this is the O version right with the 1137 base speed should be a beast i have not seen any in stock at a sane price so i ended up going with the PowerColor PCS+ 7970 VORTEXII and its base clock to 1100. it will be a bit slower than the asus but it was cheaper and in stock and form what ive read you can expect more oc room, though i think the asus will still out perform in in the range of 2-3%

the mobo is awesome --- i want/was thinking of getting one :) this one right http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128552

Ram is good, though gains above 1600 speed are not fantastic, see tomshardware and anandtech for more details  (I alo favor 16 gb of ram since its so cheap, but i run servers off mine too)

i would say a crucial m4 or samsung 830 would be the better SSD i have both and love them

what case are you using?

I changed my mind about the old server case and  have ordered a Thermaltake Level 10 snow edition full tower case along with a corsair modular AX750 gold , also the gigabyte sniper 3 arrived today and the i5 3570k and GTX 680 are enroute , so I'm left with getting some ram and a ssd drive.
