i'm pretty much doubting that.

look at the video right around the 0:30 mark.  The hand is tracked on the top, the bottom, the left, the right, the front, the back.  Kinect is flat out not capabable of that kind of tracking.  Kinect sees in 3D but from a fixed persepective ala "pin art".

I don't know how they are doing it but it is clearly not the same tech.

I like. This would make touch screens actually viable as you can have a normal monitor and a comfortable touch/motion interface. I would like to get one of these and put Android on my computer... it would be perfect.

For Kinect MS bought or licensed tech from PrimeSense. Neither MS nor PrimeSense invented or own "motion detection" in general or even just "hans-free motion detection", just like neither does Nintendo nor Sony, they just invented and patented some of the possible implementations, focusing on ones that could become affordable in time for their needs. MS in particular for Kinect commissioned from PrimeSense a lower res, lower frame rate, no CPU onboard, and for these reasons cheaper version of their motion detection tech. For next versions of Kinect obviously the most powerful versions of the tech will already be cheap enough, naturally.

Excellent idea. BTW an already existing tech that could do what you say is the one used in laser virtual keyboards, but motion detection tech is far more powerful and advanced, for example it offers higher res and depth detection.

This has nothing to do with MS or whatever.

Look at the patentwars going on. These lawsuits are not because highly technical patents, more because of really basic patents. Do you really think a company like MS with a legal division bigger than most other companies "forgot" something for one of their key devices? And now the new company will step up and outperform MS. Right...

Not gonna happen.

And for the bolded part: What did you expect them to say? The network MS has with their whole ecosystem is gigantic. Developers, hardware manufacturers, publisher, retailer, marketing people, their own devices, cross platform from Windows to Windows phone to Xbox Live etc. etc. This is where a lot of good ideas simply fail. If this is a good thing or not is a different question.

it's a totally different technique, i'm pretty sure microsoft can't do anything and that microsoft won't have what they use as patent. it's not like microsoft was the first with that. i just don't understand why you think microsoft would be the one who could do something against them and since you always like microsoft very much i thought this is the reason. i mean, you could say "sony will get money for that" as well, why do you think microsoft has the patents but not sony or whatever company? they had gesture controls before microsoft. does microsoft pay sony money for kinect? why not? isn't kinect and eyetoy both like "using gestures to control something on a screen"?

 and if microsoft can use a system with a cam and infrarot for gesture controls even when sony had gesture controls through a cam earlier without patent problems, i doubt a totally different technique (or did you see a cam/infrarot/anyting kinect has?) will have any chance to get problems because of microsoft.

Still what it can do with the hand tracking is very cool.

it only works in a space of 8 cubic feet, that's the limitation. but we know how fast techiques improve nowadays and who knows how it would work for twice the price, maybe the space would be bigger then.

but to use it on a pc, it's much better in my opinion as kinect is. just still not good enough for gaming with a console.
