Forums - Nintendo - The Wii is Nintendo's b*st*rd child...

The Wii did a great job of putting lots of money in Nintendo's pockets and keeping them in the game, but I don't think it did a great job at putting lots of great games on my tv screen. I'm hoping that the Wii U will be powerful and familiar enough to please us old school gamers - they better not mess the online up this time!

Wii was magical at the beginning, I loved Galaxy and TP. The motion controls were a great novelty at first, but in the long run it was just that - a novelty. It's all wearing a bit thin now, like a relationship gone stale - I'm currently seeing a 360 on the side, but don't tell anyone!

Too much planning, and you'll never get anything done.

To be fair, anyone with a bit of foresight and common sense knew that the initial level of hype for Wii was a double edged sword, and a sharp one at that. Disproportionate rises in popularity lead to a disproportionate decline. And Nintendo themselves would never be able to sustain such hype and demand.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

Troll harder. At least you had the dignity to omit Wii Music from your 2008 list.

It has nothing to with dignity.  It's just that Wii Music isn't a game at all and therefore wasn't listed.

It's quite simple really.  Except for the Wii (and I mean ONLY the Wii) no system has ever had the mass market consumer dive in en masse right off the bat.  Not the NES, not the SNES, not the PS1... not even the DS.  And the reason for the PS2's remarkable instant success was due to Sony having pretty much every core gamer in the bag at its launch, in addition to DVD playback.  Nintendo knows that much of what makes the WiiU stand appart (1080 graphics and more powerful tech) is not going to persuade many mass market consumers immediately, as these aren't the things that attracted them to the Wii.  Nintendo also knows that these same consumers will not be buying a NeXtBox or a PS4 at launch, either.

Therefore, Nintendo is (wisely, IMO), targeting the core gamers early on; the ones who early adopt, typically spend more on games, and who actually are apt to consider a NeXtBox or PS4 at launch.  As the system comes down in price and gains a robust library of titles, this is when WiiU can prioritize on courting the mass market, much like the DS did, which wasn't a mass market monster until over a year after its launch... and we all know how that worked out for that system.

That said, Iwata stated in a recent interview the importance of evergreen titles that will lead to Nintendo's growth early on as well, despite the whole "depth over width" philosophy.  So as long as Nintendo doesn't ignore the mass market entirely in the beginning, I see great possibility for the future of WiiU with this strategy.

*I'm actually in the process of making a thread on this very subject, so you just got the chance to debate it early.  :)

I agree with pretty much everything in your first paragraph except I really don't think that many people bought the PS2 because it was a DVD player as I suspect that not many consumers purchased a PS3 because it was a casual observation.  Just an observation.

I don't think trying to adopt core gamers first is the way to go with Wii U.  This was the strategy that they used with the Gamecube and the sales for that system were a miserable failure until a massive price drop.  Regardless of what anyone may say, the Wii was a much bigger success initially than even Nintendo expected.  The plan looked brilliant since the Wii captured the imagination of non-gamers and those that hadn't gamed for years.  Now Nintendo is turning their back on this massive group of people that bought Wiis.  Why?  They listened to press clippings and to "real gamers" that want the next Wii to be one of the HD triplets.

Nintendo doesn't seem interested in giving the people what they want.  They are interested making the games that they want to make and trying to talk the people into wanting it.

I actually found the Wii to be the first really great Nintendo Home Console since the SNES.

Even if the Wii had droughts, so does every console, and the Wii's droughts were not nearly as bad as the Gamecube's or N64's.

I think Nintendo's lowest console was the Gamecube, mostly because it is the only Nintendo console that didn't do anything interesting. The big purple lunchbox was also clearly aimed at children; it was PS2 Jr. Obviously it was also at the bottom commercially; 3DS is just getting off the ground, and it has almost outsold it.

...and Nintendo themselves killed it!

Let's first examine how the Wii is Nintendo's bastard child, shall we?

I want every Wii owner to go up to their Wii right now and to examine it closely.  Do you notice anything missing?  Can you tell me what it is?  That's right!  The name Nintendo is not on the system at all.  Nintendo is the deadbeat father that left town and didn't leave his name with his child.  What complete and utter negligence.  They need to drag his ass onto Maury.

Also, Satoru Iwata himself pretty much admitted that they made a mistake with the Wii.

Click on this if you don't believe me:  http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=142873&page=1

Nintendo made a mistake with the Wii, huh?  Is that what the call it these days?

Now let's examine  how Nintendo themselves killed off their own child.  The Wii was absolutely dominating in sales in the years 2006-08.  We used to call it Nintendomination.  It was often outselling the other two systems combined during this period.  In 2009 sales started to slow and since 2010 they have been in a downward spiral.  Many of the so called "experts" will tell you that it's because the 3rd parties didn't help the Wii out, but the real reason is that Nintendo didn't help the Wii out.  I will now list every game published by Nintendo during that period (not counting Japan only releases).

2009

New Play Control!  Mario Tennis

New Play Control!  Pikmin

New Play Control!  Donkey Kong Jungle Beat  - Really?  3 Camecube games?  Psh...

Punch-out!!  - Pretty much worthless with motion controls.

Wii Sports Resort - We were introduced to the Wii Motion Plus which hardly any games have used since.

Metroid Prime Trilogy - One nice new package - three old games.

Wii Fit Plus - You can find this in the women's clothing section.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Pretty much the only BIG release of the year.

Excitebots: Trick Racing - I know that this is a North America only release, but I mentioned it just to upset the Europeans that wanted it.

Now check out 2010

Endless Ocean 2 - Yet another franchise for Nintendo to milk.

Sin and Punishent : Star Successor - This is pretty good for a five hour game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - What a great game this was... a couple of years ago.

Poke Park Wii - Only liitle kids care about Pokemen.

Wii Party - Look!  It's Mario Party with another skin.

Kirby's Epic Yarn - What a beautiful game!  Too bad the difficulty level is for infants.

Fling Smash - A crappy pack in with a useless peripheral.

Donkey Kong Country Returns - Great game made by Retro.

Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Edition - Nintendo's selling us old stuff in a new package again.

Metroid: Other M - I have nothing nice to say about this game.

2011 is even better!  Look!

Mario Sports Mix - I played this once in Best Buy for five minutes and I want my five minutes back!

Wii Play Motion - You fooled me once, but not this time.

Mystery Case Files: The Melgrave Incident - I don't even know what this is.

Kirby's Return to Dreamland - We just got a Kirby game.  Sheesh!

The Legend of Zelda:  Skyward Sword - I like this game but many Nintendo fans don't.  Great sales, by the way.

Fortune Street - Look!  It's Mario Party with another skin.

Now look at the stellar 2012 lineup so far...

Rhythm Heaven Fever - I liked this game when it was called Wario Ware: Smooth Moves.

Poke Park 2 - More Pokemen?

Mario Party 9 - Look!  It's Mario Party.

Xenoblade Chronicles - I've played this a bit and it's good but I would like a little more gameplay with my cutscenes.

So there you go...  After 2008 Nintendo stopped releasing the kinds of games that they did in 2007 and 2008.

I'm sorry Wii that your father doesn't seem to care about you so I hope that you have a Happy Mother's Day with your mother.  Nintendo has their own mother.  You know the game Mother that many in North America wanted released, but it never happened?  I guess that Nintendo of America is a real Motherfucker and doesn't care about Mother's Day.

So what do you think VGcharters?  Is the Wii Nintendo's bastard child and is it true that they intentionally killed it?

So basically nintendo name is there and the 2006 - 2007 and 2008 list is as much full of great game as the 2009 - 2010 - 2011

Mario / Zelda / Sports / Kirby / Party / Endless Oceans and Play.

Does this thread deserve to exist any longer?

Are you telling me that you think that the games that Nintendo released from 2009 on were as good as those that were released between 2006 and 08?  I don't think that's being very honest.

Well Galaxy 1 and 2 are equal to me.

DK NSMBWii KIRBY And ZELDA SS are all better than what released prior 2009.

If you want to say that SMG ! and 2 are equal I can accept that.

But do you really think that DK, NSMB Wii, the Kirbys , and LOZ: SS = Wii Sports, LOZ: TP, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart Wii?  Because I don't and I can honestly say that it's not even close.
