I agree with something fillet said, the movie wasnt aimed as us, yet that was to be expected, no real comic based movie has been really nice to us or have followed the comic totally (except maybe Watchmen).

Dude, Snyder changed the entire ending of The Watchmen.

Whedon wrote a new story for this movie but you'll be hard pressed to find a truer adaptation of the characters themselves.

I actually found Wacthmen movie ending satisfying. I like that Rosharch didnt die "alone" and had a friend to watch instead of having NIteOwl banging silkspecter for the third time. Also left the structure of the story intact.

Thank you mr. RocketPig for bringing the light. Your points are spot on.

Not being a comic book fan myself.... it doesn't matter. This is one of the very few superhero movies that clearly makes you feel like the characters are real. They are actual people who make sense based on what you are told about their abilities.

The last superman movie broke that massively with Superman. The last two Hulk movies just were never quite right, but here he is just about perfect. Though I do agree there could have been better evidence for his more controlled state. The lesser characters without real powers were still characters and made real contributions where they were clearly out classed.

Furthermore.... the scripting was pure gold. It just was, there is no denying that unless you're a brick.

Well, The Avengers is a lot tougher movie to direct than X-Men. In X-Men, the characters are completely driven by Xavier, which allows for a pretty linear and tight story. On top of that, there are obvious first tier, second tier, and third tier X-Men. There are several characters to deal with but many of them can get virtually no screen time (Colossus), moderate screen time (Rogue, Ice Man, etc.), or be a primary character (Wolvie, Jean). The Avengers had five or six primary characters.

On top of that, The Avengers are a motley bunch. What I thought was most fun about the movie is that the heroes did fight before coming together. It's an homage to the original Avengers story where they, unsurprisingly, fought Loki. The Avengers have always been about disparate heroes agreeing to come together to fight a greater evil, most of the time very reluctantly. You've read the comics, you know how often the characters fight one another. It happens all the time. That kind of story is going to seem more superficial and shallow than a Dark Knight or X-Men. It's just a different kind of film.

I'm really interested to see where they take Cap in future films. In Iron Man 2, we saw Tony start drinking too much but it ever devolved into full-blown alcoholism. In that vein, it will be interesting to see if Cap become disenfranchised with the American government over time.

PS. Nobody is really talking about it in the thread but Whedon did a fantastic job with Black Widow. I went into the movie thinking she was going to be vacuous arm candy but Johannssen hit it out of the park with her performance. She actually seemed like a real person, God forbid. That's far too rare when it comes to female action heroes. And my god, her ass. It was nice to see a female action star on film who didn't look like she could be broken in half by a six year old boy.

If you could see the smile on my face when she was "interrogating" Loki and they kept showing her from the back.....

That's what I love about Whedon. That movie was ass shots galore. Almost everybody got one at some point. But even then, it never felt like gratuitous exploitation, just good-natured fun. I don't know how Whedon walks that tightrope but the dude does it over and over and over again.

I just chalked up Banner's improved control over the Hulk as a side effect of his embracing the beast within. All in all, I don't think it really matters. Not everything needs to be explained, especially in a movie like The Avengers. None of the plot holes were big enough to get in the way of enjoying the film.

It was well done imo. Up there with Spider-man 1&2 and the first Iron Man. Also, I think The Dark Knight is a great movie but not as great as people make it seem.

Nah. Avengers was ridiculously stupid. Impressed as I was by the CGI and how well they put everything together. Most of the jokes fell flat and the 3D was so bad I'm swearing off of it forever. I liked the movie, don't get me wrong. But the heroes show no sign of pain and there is nothing relatable about these characters as put together in this movie. Individually they are more interesting.

The Dark Knight is still king.

This. It was ok, laughed at some jokes, but no, it's not the best super hero movie.

Btw, I still prefer Justice Friends :)

The Dark Knight prompted me to make, not one, but TWO threads on VGChartz. One called "How did you get your scars" and another asking which choice would you make if you were on one of those ferries at the end of the movie. Needless to say, it left a pretty big impression on me. If I had to make a top five, I'd say:

Best Comic Book based Movies

1. The Dark Knight: Could function just as well as a movie if some things were changed and it wasn't Batman at all. It was just a great crime thriller. Not really a "superhero movie" in the traditional sense but its a really good movie that starred a Super Hero.

2. X-Men: First Class: Great characters, great motivation, and plenty of great moments. The narrative was tight and the mood was right on point. Mutant and proud. Best of all, this wasn't a "Wolverine and the X-Men" movie. It was an X-Men movie and the best one by far.

3. Iron Man: Bright and colorful with a good story, a great character, a few cool set pieces, and a wonderful performance by Robert Downey Jr.. Before this movie, Iron Man was a decent character but I never really cared about him. A long time ago, in the comics, Iron Man turned evil and the only way the Avengers could fight him was to go back and grab Tony Stark when he was a teenager to fight Tony Stark of today. Just putting that out there. Anyway, I saw this movie with my girlfriend and she hates comic books......but she and I both loved this.

4. Chronicle: Not a superhero movie in the traditional sense but probably the best superhero origin story I have ever seen. It's set in the real world. I totally didn't expect this film to work. It not alone blew away my expectations, it just plain wowed me. Great film.

5. Sin City: This wasn't just an adaptation of a comic book. It WAS the comic book. A lot of the dialog was word for word from the Frank Miller books. Many of the visuals looked just like the panels of the comic books. As far as a comic translation to a movie, this has to be the most faithful of all time.

6. The Avengers
7. Superman II
8. Spider-Man
9. The Rocketeer (SEE THIS MOVIE!)
10. X-Men 2

Honorable Mentions to: Captain America, Kick Ass, The Incredible Hulk, Superman, Batman (1989), Scott Pilgrim, Watchmen, Hellboy, 300, A History of Violence, Blade (the forgotten hero in this Marvel revolution) and Thor.

Dishonorable Mentions to: Supergirl, Steel, Batman and Robin, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider II, Superman 3 and 4, and too many others that I want to name but won't.

Kick-Ass, if you'd have just stuck to the script for the last 30 minutes, you would have been in the top ten.....

Excellent choices, though I'd struggle to put Iron Man above Avengers. I won't argue too much with the decision though. Solid movie all around.

I'm glad we can both agree that First Class is the best X-Men film. That's not a knock on the first two X movies but First Class was better cast, had better acting, and was a tighter movie overall.

Oh, and Chronicle deserved to do about a billion times better than it did at the box office.

No Batman Begins? Honestly, I think that was nearly as good as The Dark Knight. In some ways, better, because it didn't tangent with multiple villains. It was simply the Liam Neeson show.

PS. No way does FF deserve a dishonorable mention while DD escapes the fray. FF was miles better than DD.

And Green Lantern was worse than both of them.

For Iron Man, I guess it's just a case of never being able to forget your "First".  It kinda lacked action but I was okay with that.  I'm probably still buzzing off of that first appearance of Nick Fury at the end.  I left off Batman Begins because I intended to just do one movie per franchise.  I got away from that pretty quickly, though.  OH!  TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT DAREDEVIL, CATWOMAN, AND ELEKTRA!!

Shit, I forgot about Elektra and Catwoman. Both were terrible but Catwoman was a special kind of unwatchable tat few movies achieve.
