Is this based on a gut feeling, or on science?

Because all of the research I've seen suggests that same sex parents are just as effective at raising children as opposite sex parents.

Eh, i cut him slack on that one.  I mean they made something illegal that wasn't legal in the firstplace and didn't really exist.

It would be like passing a law making the passing of inherentence rights solved via tetris tournaments illegal.

Although, not even that because that's something that theoretically could happen without a law change

That's really what it is, a personal contract - only is so entranced in our culture, that actually thousands of federal rights and laws, including the US Constitution, are bound in relationships that use the term marriage.  And their marriage has to be recognized by the Federal government.  Rather than invent something new, and change the 12,000+ Federal Laws – it makes more since to make marriage available for everyone, as they did half a century ago when allowed the races to inter-marry.

When Obama was born, about 20+ states wouldn’t have allowed his inter-racial parents to get married.  Interestingly, about 30ish states right how have similar bans on same-sex marriage.

Many Church always did, and many still do, perform same-sex marriages.  So it's not really an issue about religion - no one Church could be forced to perform any wedding they do not want to perform - a benefit of the separation of Church and State (although ignoramuses try to make this case.)  It’s about everyone having the same opportunity for the same Civil Rights.

So I don’t really care what the rights are called, as long as everyone has the same access, opportunity, and respect.

Actually, the two mom thing - statically, it's the best for children.  Now I am not advocating taking kids away from two parent opposite sex homes, because they would be mostly like be better with a lesbian pair, because that would be an insane overreach of governmental authority.  But it does show that would be the best case scenario.

Also, where do you get your 1 man 1 woman idea about marriage?  It's a rather recently phenomena - many cultures always have had same sex marriage, and many cultures had many woman, one man marriages (and I can only think of one the other way), or people had cortisones and such.  It’s not Biblical nor really Historical, more of a Romanic and modern thing.

PS Same Sex Marriage has already been passed in the USA for several years already, and  because of the 14^th amendment, probably will be in your state within 5 more (or 7 if Romney get's elected, Same Sex Marriage will still happen - as it did in Massachusetts when he was Governor.)  It's really not a big deal unless you are gay and are having your rights denied, otherwise you will be just fine, and the moon will still go around the earth, etc.)

can someone please explain why this is such a big deal in america, is it really that backward over there? Britain's tolerated gays for a few decades now, especially in the last 20 years

Hey now, that's not fair.  Some places in the US allows same sex marraige.

A gay person has more chance getting married in the US, than in the UK.

That is true, but there is more homophobia in the USA than in Britain. America has this really weird dual personality of the very socially liberal and the ridiculously socially conservative, most other countries don't have that to nearly the same degree.
