Microsoft Patents Pressure-Sensitive Controller With Built-In Memory

Microsoft may have a controller in the works that can recognize the person holding it.

A recently discovered patent shows an Xbox 360 controller that can recognize a player, "using a hand-pressure signature." If it can remember who you are, then it may have some memory built into it. Microsoft similar interactivity with the Kinect, but personally, I have never been able to get it to recognize me, so I am skeptical about this new idea.

People often forget that the Wii remote has a little bit of storage capacity. The Wii remote won't recognize who you are just by touching it, but you can transport up to 10 Miis to another Wii console using the remote.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Seriously though, if they think that this will counter the Wii U controller, then they're wrong. They might find some interesting connections with the Kinect though, but at the moment I fail to see the possibilities.



I'd rather they worked on getting rid of the ugly and bulky battery case I still see sitting under the damn thing there. My least favorite aspect of the controller by a long way.

mine recognises me, or my daughter, almost 100% of the time...... 


Mine too.

But mine recognises me or my son, not you and your daughter.

It is, but the major advantage to that bulky battery case is the fact that if you go online and buy Ni-MH batteries, you can get 3300mAh AA cells, which will provide over 40 hours rather than the rated 25 hours of continuious play. 

Having said that, with the new Li-Ion batteries that will likely be coming out following the discovery that if you put holes in the battery casing you get even better performance out of the battery, Microsoft may opt to go with a Li-Ion rechargable battery next time.

Why would you think it is intended to counter the Wii U controller? 

The point is to be able to customize the identity and layout of the controller based on who's using it.  For a single person on a single console, it's pretty simple, but say you have three people that regularly play with you on your console.  With the help of the pressure sensitive controller, you'd be able to switch on the controller and have the console automatically log in the profile and configure the gamepad layout based on the individual preferences for that person.  No more, switch on the controller, log in your profile, then customize the controller layout all before playing a round of a game.  Instead, grab the controller and turn it on.
