Forums - Sony - What is Sony's problem with their comicky characters?

I think that they all have too much character. Nintendo's 'comicky' characters usually don't speak too much (or at all), letting kids fill in the empty space with their imagination. Kids want to shape their character the way they want rather than being shaped by it.

This may have some point. I want to add, that Mario looks very similar in every game, while Link changes in nearly every game. I don't know if this has to do with anything, but I just noticed.

The Legend of Zelda is rated +12 though.

As everyone knows one big difference between Nintendo and Sony is that Sony is lacking of good comicky characters for the younger people. (Also for the older ones, but you know what i am speaking of, the comicky, childish style for jump and run games and so on).
You may now say Sony has tried hard to bring some IPs for this genre. Some Characters people just love and buy each single output because they a) know the game will be great but b) love to meet again for example Mario, Luigi, Bowser, the Toad and many more.

Here is what Sony brought to life:

Does anyone recognize some trivial similarities here?

Except of Sackboy who is awesome and should be "the" mascot for the PS (He could switch to every IPs main-character costume for some advertisements), SONY did not really try to expand in this direction this gen, or am i missing something?

I also think Sony also knows about this - they should think of that while doing this new Allstars Battle Royale. So what are you thinking Sony should do?

I personally like the Idea of getting Fat Princess for a standdalone game, the fat princess could be one of those unique characters Sony needs. Some childy style, but also with a sense of humor.

Anyone having thoughts for new Sony characters who would fit into the "family"?

All of them have big ears? XD

I also think that the sack-boy must be the kirby/shang-tsung/doppleganger, etc ;)

I think that in order to Fat Princess be a game that can bring new childy audience to the PS3, needs a single player / story campaign, just like mario, kirby, and other nintendo games.

First, I didn't understand that at all. Are you arguing that the characters are unoriginal, or too mature or what is your point? Second, those 3 characters alone are badass, and I'm glad to see Sony brought Rachet and Clank and Sly over to the PS3 on NEW games (Still waiting for Jak and Daxter PS3)

On an unrelated side note, I think Sony is into furries...

That's the point, all pictures i've posted are furries. They are just not original enough. I am missing some more.

But they're not the same type of characters. Jak is a true badass, while Daxter is a smartass. Rachet is righteous, adventurous  and a bit of a hot head while clank is methodical and more rational than rachet. I don't know much about sly but I assume he's mysterious yet witty.

They may be targeted towards the same audience but they are definetely original.

what exactly is the question here? no offense but your grammar is very bad.

The reason Sony doesn't have many cartoony mascots is because they are't trying to go after the younger gamers too much. They are focused on the older ones.

Do I win?

If some reason I though Crash needs to be besides them.

But yea Sony icons ranges from sackboy to kratos so its hard for them to have a defiant audience.

Bet with gooch_destroyer, he wins if FFX and FFX-2 will be at $40 each for the vita. I win if it dont

Made an account just to post in this thread, hello everyone :)

I remember reading back in the PS1 era, Sony saying they "didn't want a mascot" for the Playstation. I think it was to do with the fact that their rivals at the time, Nintendo and Sega, were both led by platforming characters - Mario and Sonic respectively. Eventually they ended up with a ton of 'unofficial' mascots - Lara Croft, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro etc, so I guess it didn't quite work out how they'd planned.

Anyway, they've kind of continued this attitude ever since, in my opinion - which is why I was so surprised that now of all times they decided to make a mascot-based multiplayer game.

They probably wouldn't have carried any of their platforming 'mascots' over into this generation given the choice, at least that's how I see it. Insomniac (third party) made the new Ratchet games and Jak and Sly haven't seen any new releases this gen - the new Sly was a response to the positive reaction of the HD collection.

They're different from Nintendo in that they're more than happy to ditch mascots in favour of creating new ones for each generation (Crash -> Jak -> Drake, for example) while holding on to them very occasionally (Kratos from God of War, I suppose Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal as well), but maybe we're seeing a shift from that mindset with the new Sly game on the horizon. I'd be quite interested to see how Sackboy goes into the next generation - he's a very versatile character to have as he can literally be anything they want him to be, which is going to work well for them.

Anyway, I've waffled a bit but hopefully I got a few points across :)

I don't really understand your post? Do you want more comicky characters or what? Playstation is not defined by one simple brand like other consoles, it uses a variety of characters. Sackboy and Sly for the younger crowd, Kratos and Sweettooth for the older crown.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

The worst thing you can do is to try and force the "cool" factor on a character; that's how you end up with abominations like Bubsy. The Playstation characters in the OP, while nowhere near that bad, just come across as a bit generic to me. They don't suck, but I could take 'em or leave 'em.

That's why I truly hope that Sony realizes what a gem they have with Sackboy, who is by far the best candidate at becoming the Playstation's "Mario" IMO. He/she is very lovable and has a lot more character than any of Sony's others of this type of mascot.

Our studies show that the kids want cartoon characters that are cool and edgy.
