Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Wii is a gen 6 console (Hiroshi Yamauchi)

Wii and DS are gen 6 after all.

Well guys, after all the debating, the verdict is finally in. Looking into some older articles, I just found out today that Hiroshi Yamauchi, former president of NCL, as well as the Nintendo leadership, never considered the Wii or the DS next-gen consoles.

The former NCL president dismissed the quick arrival of a next-generation console.

"Nintendo has no plans to release a so-called 'next-generation' videogame console at the next year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas. We will rather make a new proposal that uses the GameCube at its core," he said. "Only people who do not know the videogame business would advocate the release of next-generation machines when people are not interested in cutting-edge technologies." Yamauchi added that Nintendo's leadership shares his view of the business.

Well guys, it looks like we weren't so far from the truth after all. Suddenly, it is all more than clear that Nintendo lacked vision in restricting its Wii console from offering next-gen graphics. Thankfully, the DS did not suffer the same fate in lost opportunity and continued to dominate its market.

Thanks for watching

I'm not sure if serious... this interview was dated back in Feburary 13, 2004.

You are like the Gilgamesh of Nintendo forums.

lol, I'll take that as a compliment benao87.

Remember that Wii was originally conceived as a GC add-on, before Nintendo wisely figured that add-ons don't really change a console's fate. At best, Wii would have been Kinect or the Balance Board, rather than being... the Wii. It would have put GC well above Xbox, but not really turned the industry on its head as it did

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

And to add to this, they didn't even reveal the Wii(or Revolution as it was called, awesome name) at E3 2004. They also teased that they were working on it. This is a joke thread right?

Alright I guess, but even if yes, does it matter?

In other words: The GC is actually catching up with the PS2 0.o

ONLY 40 MILLION TO GO!!!

It really is power-wise.

Put a PS2 side by side with a Wii and most people won't notice a difference.
