Forums - Gaming - Who did what wrong this gen? (big 3, devs, pubs, consumers)

Which of the big 3 had the most potential to "win" this gen?

Microsoft 17 12.88%

Sony 79 59.85%

Nintendo 36 27.27%

Total:132

i agree with all of your points op.

MS really did nothing wrong. they may have hurt gamers on PS3 with their timed DLC/exclusives and what not but that's the nature of the business.

Sony really didn't do anything wrong either. yea hacks, second coming's, bad marketing, but look at what they've provided the gamers.

Nintendo's only real fault was not making Wii with traditional controllers. yea i know wii had the classic controller, but you had to purchase it as a separate device, which shouldn't have been the case.

all in all as gaming companies, they all did something the other didn't and that speaks volumes, thus the reason for the type of success they had this gen.

Sony

Kind of self-explanatory. Even if the hardware wasn't over-priced it was certainly over-powered. Letting go of their massive casual user base was probably their greatest mistake.

Microsoft

Messed up big time on their hardware - Heavily unreliant. Lost a shit-load of potential by rushing Rare's games out of the gate and by underestimating the power of  their IP's who all seemingly died (except for a few, who got their quality cut in half).

Nintendo

Letting go of the already few "hardcore" gamers. While it most certainly was a wise decision business-wise, people like me would have rather seen great graphics and third party support than a bunch of games where you shake your controllers to try to get back in shape.

Edit: It's funny because the poll currently looks like a penis.

Seems like Sony is "winning" so far.

Sony:

  • Overpriced parts that weren't and still aren't ideal for console hardware
  • Just blatantly bad marketing this gen

Microsoft:

  • RRoD fiasco
  • Ignoring a few IP's that could have been big this gen

Nintendo:

  •  Introducing motion controls (*shakes fist*)
  • Underpowered hardware
  • No focus on the "hardcore"

MS did wrong by releasing a console that was not ready to be released
Sony put technology in PS3 that made it too expensive but really gave them no advantage over 360
Nintendo downprioritized Virtual Console for shovelware on Wiiware. Also 512 MB storage-space. Too many peripherals
3rd parties underestimated the Wii and by the time they realized that was a mistake it was too late because shovelware killed the market for 3rd party games. They were also blinded by High Definition

I would say Sony. They have the highest selling console, the PS2, and they could've done something just as great with the PS3. (Don't ask me what made the PS2 so popular, I don't know.) Sony did something right the generation before last gen. that they didn't do with the PS3.

can't stay number one forever with rivals like ninity and MS. someone has to be the victim, and this time it was Sony. no console maker has ever had 3 back to back consecutive wins unless you look at ninty in the handheld department. the last 4 gen's (7th gen. isn't over yet. you could argue the 6th is still going cause PS2 continues to sale) have seen ninty 2 consecutive wins, and Sony 2 consecutive wins.

your statement is black and white, and not realistic. it's not sound logic to say, "because sony won the 5th and 6th gen's, they should have done better this (7th)gen. in that case, ninty would have won 4 straight. it jut doesn't work like that.

you hear about iphone until the hype die's down, then you hear about how good android is. try not being so black and white. you can't pre-write the story before the movie starts. you have to do it at least 2 yr's in advance.

What? Why are you criticizing what I posted so much? It was just my opinion.

I think that a large part of the PS2's success can be attributed to the failings of the competition.

It also proves that better graphics =/= always win. (NGC had the best graphics, right?)

Quite so, the GC was fairly powerful, more so than the PS2. The x-box was the most powerful though.

And it failed the most, right?

Sony failed at marketing this gen

Nintendo failed with the motion controls this gen, I dont see myself trying to play a Wii 10 years from now for nostalgia sake, imagine trying to fire up Skyward Sword again and try to learn how to play the Motion+ and setting up the sensor bar

Microsoft failed with the RROD, 55% failure rate is just unacceptable. And the most shocking thing is, MS knew about the RROD before 360 launch but they still released it on the market, for that 1 year headstart.
