Forums - Gaming - Is Nintendo preparing to dominate?

Yes and no.

Nintendo is preparing to dominate, however I am with holding any judgement on whether or not they will until I see Sony and Microsoft's machines. Of course Nintendo appears to be taking the whole business success thing far more seriously then its competitors. Nintendo is determined to maintain its lead from this generation.

A good indication of that is the 3DS sales were pretty wretched but Nintendo would have survived the system would have sold a much smaller amount then it did after the price cut but could have still succeeded. However Nintendo was not satisfied by the prospect of merely succeeding they wanted to dominate. Nintendo probably could have gotten away with a 50$ price cut to 199.99$ but instead chose 169.99$ something completely unheard of. This shows a change in Nintendo strategy, Nintendo rarely takes losses on their hardware and they never do that early after launch. The loss was taken solely to boost Nintendo's market share and help crush Sony.

As far as handheld goes Sony is beat as Michael Pachter said dead on arrival, could it be saved? Yes it could but to do so Sony will need to drastically change their business model. First thing needed is a price cut likely to 189.99$ a slightly higher cost then 3DS. Second Sony needs to shift focus off of ports, gamers do not want to buy their game twice even if that means not playing it on the go. Sony could offer downloadable versions of their games free to PSVita if a full retail copy is bought. To prevent people from downloading a game they don't own it could be linked to a single PSN account allowing a single Vita download then it could require the console version to interact with it. This way you could play at home tun on your Vita interact with the PS3 for a second and take the game on the go. A third factor is marketing the Vita simply lacks the marketing drive required. Sony releasing all stars and GoW:A on PS3 is a major mistake in my books both titles should be Vita exclusives. If All Stars isn't Vita exclusive which it won't be, then a Vita version with exclusive characters and levels should most definitely see release. As others pointed out Sony has lost its big third party supporters like Capcom's Monster Hunter, this could be the final generation for a PlayStation game dedicated handheld. My bet is if Sony loses with Vita they will reuse its hardware assets in the development of future phones and tablets that will carry the PlayStation brand.

On the home console front Nintendo appears to be positioning themselves for an epic battle. The open online network is Nintendo's biggest attack on Live to date. Nintendo will be offering an online network that Microsoft and Sony simply can't with their current infrastructure. Nintendo allowing DLC, subscription, F2P and fully downloadable retail titles is an indication Nintendo is heading in for the kill. The idea of having film, music and even books on the WiiU will make the console and tablet staples in the living room.

Nintendo's assault on the more hardcore demographics is another major move to secure top spot again. Everything indicates Nintendo will be targeting the non-Nintendo gamers who regularly purchase games in full force. All the FPS developer hires at Retro point to a possible shooter or western game. If you look at the 3ds its domianting globally

The ex-Bizarre team making a new realistic driving sim among all the other core games believed to be coming. I mean Silicon has been dropping hints nonstop of a new Nintendo title as have several other studios. We still don't know what half of Japan has been doing the last two years, most of Nintendo's internal studios have been working on top secret projects. A ton of Nintendo's 3DS lineup was outsourced to second and third party studios. Nintendo will have a massive first party lineup to show in comparison to what Sony or Microsoft can possibly muster for their next generation launches.

On the third party front, Reggie has already stated Nintendo sees the lack of multiplat last gen as a massive flaw and weakness. He has publicly stated several times that Nintendo wants to be able to receive ports next generation. This likely means a more powerful system then most are expecting, yet weak enough to keep hardware and software development costs low. While a next generation Microsoft and Sony game might cost 80-100 million roughly 3 times current Dev costs, Nintendo will keep costs down. Cheaper development costs will drive third party support, if the big Activision and EA ignore Nintendo plenty of other publishers won't. THQ will be throwing its full support behind WiiU as will UbiSoft. Other publishers like Atari, Majesco...etc...etc.. really won't have any choice in the matter it will come down to (Support Nintendo or die). Unless all the rumors are false and NextBox really isn't as powerful as people are saying.

After development costs we need to think retail costs. The Nintendo hardware could be a hundred dollars or more cheaper then its closest competitor. This puts them in a strong position during a time when the world's consumers are pinching pennies. For the first time in a long time the film and games industries appear to be being hit hard by economic troubles. This is the perfect time to launch a powerful and innovative machine at a cost effective price. Nintendo appears to be positioning itself for a slaughter fest!

It will be interesting to see what the finished WiiU looks like as well as how Microsoft and Sony counter!

Well I hope, but don't jinx it.

Title is very misleading.

Wii dominated, DS dominated, 3DS is dominating now.

WiiU will have a headstart, thus dominating by default over the unreleased Xbox and PS4.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

light years, LIGHT YEARS "excuse me" *goes off to laugh hysterically*

hey bro, how about you actually go buy a ps3 and a vita (playing one at your friends house does NOT count) so you too can see how unbelievably funny your OP is

you can always tell the Nintendo fans that have only ever played Nintendo products

It seems like it, look at the line up they have coming.

Hopefully "dominate" means adding third parties because the last domination was a freakin yawn fest.

It seems they are recruiting several 3rd party studios. Have you seen their Sales Briefing

I feel that the WiiU will release with an enormous library of games... Lack of NEW games is what hurt the 3DS launch so Nintendo is waiting for other developers to jump on board for the core gamers before they release the system. The WiiU was announced almost a year ago already... why keep your fans waiting this long unless they have a bigger plan in store
