Zynga and Gameloft business practices are acceptable now?

You are looking at this from the completely wrong angle.

What you need to see is that even a high profile copy can't even remotely match the sales of a Nintendo product, thus it invalidates any claims that people would stop buying Nintendo systems if smartphones/tablets/whatever offered a similar experience. The only way for Nintendo to get into trouble is self-destruction.

False.
There is no game like Smash Bros on PS3.....so All-Stars and Smash Bros aren't really competing for sales. Most people will buy both if they have both systems.

That's not true, at all. Anything you can buy compete for sales. Even a trip to the Caribbean and a PS3 compete for sales.

Either way, I think it's silly to get caught up in this looking similar to another game series.

It's a win-win for everyone, if it's bad everyone gets to laugh at Sony and point out how superior the original Smash Bros is, if it's a good game, you get two great crossover brawler franchises instead of just one.

This is a great point.  Again, if this game is good, it pushes sakurai to bre even better. A win for everyone involved inmy mind.

Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion XL? Then again that game looks awful...

Who wants to bet that Altair or Ezio is going to be in this game? That franchise is whored into every game from Metal Gear to FInal Fantasy,

it has?

Well, to be more specific, the franchise has been whored into those two games......and Soul Calibur.  There's an Ezio/Altair skin in those two games and Ezio is in Soul Calibur.  Way to kill my joy, Jay520.

Also though I've got to say.......what is going on with Sony's fall 2012 linup, this and LittleBigPlanet Karting? Both of them are well, let's say very similar to two franchises Nintendo is known for. And the Last of Us and God of War are both going to be 2013 by the looks of it. I just honestly don't see Sony having a very good holiday season this year unless they really ad some big name games we don't know about because so far 2012 is looking like the worst lineup the PS3's had in a LONG time. Sony All Stars and LBP Karting aren't near enough to combat some of the other huge franchises that are launching this holiday.

would plz STAY OUT OF MY DAME HEAD!!!!

i've feared the worse for Sony since 2011 yr. end on this front. FFv13 is their only hope, but i still doubt that will help or come out for that matter. my friend i've often times agreed with you and this time is no different.

i'm holding on to a few things though.

Guerrilla games: 2 KZ's in dev. and one new shooter. reveal at E3?

MM: something new having no idea what it is! reveal at E3? doubtful.

Suckerpunch: new ip! reveal at E3? also doubtful.

Quantic Dreams: new ip! reveal at E3? highly doubtful.

Rockstar: AGENT! may never see the light of day, or E3? both highly probable.

other then that, Soy had better have a big secret they're telling no one or 2012 could very well go to MS.

FFV13 is their only hope for what?

Soy had better have a big secret they're telling no one or 2012 could very well go to MS.

2012 could go to MS?? what do you mean game wise? software sales wise? Hardware sales wise?

???

lol nothing to rivale Halo, so all of the above if you will.

@NintendoPie : why would you own any console for one game? i've yet to buy a 360 for GEARS for that very reason.

As a massive (it's one of my favorite games) fan of the super smash bros franchise, I am happy to have another game in the similar vein. Nothing more nothing less. I think it's silly (read:stupid) that someone would be upset or even angry at something like this. It's a video game people, this is pretty trivial (not saying it isn't fun of course!) stuff. The fact that some people have developed such a sense of loyalty to an openly-traded company with a fiduciary responsibility to make money that they'll get upset when a game similar (read:clone) to one of theirs is released is nothing short of depressing.

Sometime ago I saw a quote that is relevant: "Love the games not the companies; They love your money, not you"

This is so true. The only reason why it's touchy in the world of video games is that the medium strives to be an art form.

Of course in a capitalistic world rip-offs are allowed and welcome (like in the Pepse vs Coke scenario), but in the world of art it's less acceptable.

I think that's why the fan in us is disgusted, but the gamer in us is thrilled, hence why some thought I was schizophrenic

I'm really glad we talked about this because there are reasons why we're all right and wrong at the same time, and that's why forums are there to share. And you're right, companies don't love us, but some care about what we want because that drives their business, others are more draconian. So I'm glad Sony listened to their fans in making PABR, it's the right direction for the industry. I'm also glad the game will look so much like smash because I love that game. But ultimately, I'm hoping for more uniqueness and less idea stealing from these companies as the industry matures, otherwise it's not a good sign for the art-form in general I find.

A dualistic view, but I'm honestly torn. Ultimately I'm buying this game no doubt, it looks awesome, but inside of me part of me is not happy about the situation. I'll get over it, but I and others do need to express this feeling and talk about it

I wholly disagree with those statements. Nobody claims that Pissarro copied Monet for painting impressionist paintings, nobody starts arguing when the second rapper ever used a beat in one of his songs because another rapper did. The simple reason why people are upset is because they have developed an affinity towards a particular company (In this case, they are Nintendo or Sony)

Idea stealing is good for the industry! It puts fresh minds on ideas that have been wringed out by the same 5 people for years. It allows people to put their own touch (and while I will admit, there isn't much of a touch that I can see as of now) on an idea, which allows for the good aspects to be transferred and the better ones added. Without copying of ideas, we'd be playing first person shooters without the modern control scheme, or without online multiplayer. Can you imagine if people got upset when the second company to release a 3D game announced it? We might only have 1 company making 3D games! That's madness!

I think the heart of the issue as Sal said is the degree of idea-taking. It's relativity. You mention taking parts of a rif, I'm talking taking the whole rif and simply changing a few words.

Of course inspiration is acceptable, it's when you're litterally re-skinning the game that it makes it mildly revolting.

But I was mostly agreeing with your previous post, I just wanted to add that copying is not seen as a good thing when it comes to art, but when it comes to consumerism it is, hence why I'm divided in the debate. I'm on both sides because I'm looking at it from both viewpoints.

People say that PS characters are not famous enough. Yes compared to Mario but other Nintendo franchises? Zelda isnt what is used to be, GoW and Uncharted games have outsold it this gen. So Nintendo only have 1 character who is hugely popular and nothing come close to it be it from Sony or other companies. So yes nothing is more popular then Mario but thats it. Pokemon character also but dont know his name that yellow thing.

^Pokemon, and there are a few in smash

Pokemon is popular all around the world.

Zelda, even if outsold, is still very popular.

All of the chars. in Mario are extremely popular.

Older generations know who Ness is and what Starfox characters are.

Fire Emblem is very popular in Japan.

Your arguement to Sony being just as popular as Nintendo (Character wise) is invalid.
