Forums - Sony - Should Sony ditch the Playstation Vita?

oni-link said:

It's too late in the game for Sony to save this handheld.  If the 3DS doesn't bring it to it's grave the smart-devices (tablets, phones etc) surely will!!! Remember Sony at the moment is fighting for their lives and anything that could hinder their progress should be cut off!!!

The same was said for the 3DS. Some people have terrible memory it seems.

The same was also said for the PS3. Now it is amongst the leading selling consoles worldwide.

Conclusion: You just don't want the Vita to do well. It is pretty obvious considering the fact that it launched in NA/EU less than 3 months ago and you think this is somehow "too late in the game". How does any sane person think the Vita should be dropped completely when it wasn't even given a chance? This isn't a Virtual Boy we're dealing with here.

There is no explanation why Sony should ditch the Vita.
What is to be done to make it successful:

- more native games obviously
- PS1 support, this is a must!
- integrate the vita as a controller for ps3 games, copy the WiiU concept
- gain indie-developer support through the SDK - hell man, i was looking at the indiegames on steam and would buy some of them for the vita.
- bring a goddamn foot on the japanese market. every week you see several PSP games releasing in the top 10 in japan. why the heck aren't they automatically available on the vita as download, too?
- support the vita with PS+, give me (dynamic) backgrounds, give me one or two minis, just to have more games to play when i just have a few minutes time to play. a handheld needs a reason why pick it with you, when you leave your house. that's what i am missing right now. bring more social network games like a pokemon style game where you can fight against people you meet in the streets...

if they'd reach some of this goals, the vita will be successful.

Some? better everything, thing needs all the extra features and games it can have.

I do love my Vita and don't think for a second that Sony should ditch it but they do need to have a stellar E3 annoucing loads of upcoming AAA games - snatch a Monster Hunter if possible from Capcom and make sure that Call of Duty for the Vita gets loads of focus for the US and EU gamers!

I didn't read too many posts in this thread but I'll chronicle my experience.

At my job, there's a lot of down time so we find multiple ways to entertain ourselves. People always have the latest technology. I started in 2009. When I started working, I used my DS. A lot of people had PSP's so I got one, too. I really liked it. It was a sleek piece of tech. I used it for music, movies, comics, and gaming. Then, everybody started buying iPhones and Droids. Suddenly, the PSP looked pretty limited.

I eventually got a Droid in 2010 and my PSP was almost forgotten. I grabbed a 3DS when everybody else was buying tablets. It was fun. I grabbed a Vita, too. It's a nice device, as well. Never really wanted a tablet. I still don't. The thing is, I was on post with a guy the other day. I was playing Ninja Gaiden on the Vita (when I'm around other people, I don't play the 3DS. Somebody once saw me playing Mighty Switch Force. I felt so ashamed!). He took out his iPad and showed me some RPG (Infinity Blade, I think), Tiger Woods Golf, and some other game called The Crow. This was Monday afternoon.

The things he showed me made the Vita look like garbage by comparison. The thing that turned me off to tablets was the touch screen only controls. They don't have the type of third party support that portable consoles have, either. The thing is, the Vita is trying to compete on two fronts. It's trying to be a dedicated game device like the 3DS. It's trying (and kinda failing) to be a slick/cool piece of mind blowing tech like an iPad/iPhone. I don't think it has a chance against either.  A ton of people had PSP's.  A few people had a DS.  I've seen a couple of 3DS systems (though, one of the guys wants to sell his for $100). Right now, I'm the only one with a Vita.

I just don't think I would ever feel cool pulling out my Vita in public and playing a game whereas playing something on a smart phone or tablet wouldn't even raise an eye. The Vita will never be as popular as the 3DS. I don't have any idea what Sony is doing with the Vita and I have no idea what Sony could possibly do with the Vita. Call of Duty? Even if that game is coming, I just don't see it changing the Vita's current pattern.

Since the launch of the Vita, I have spent probabyly $700 trying to make it awesome.
-$300 3G Vita
-$20 case
-$50 Uncharted
-$10 Super Stardust
-$50 Ninja Gaiden
-$50 Virtua Tennis
-$50 Marvel vs. Capcom 3
-PSP games to fill the void: $40 Soul Calibur, $30 Dead or Alive Paradise, $30 Silent Hill
-In preparation for the Vita, maybe a week befor launch, I also bought both God of War PSP games, Def Jam, and something I can't remember.

I posted all of this because I want to show you guys that I want the Vita to succeed. I've supported it with my wallet. I got it the day it came out. I just don't see it succeeding on any level. I'm not saying Sony should drop it (I'd be pissed since I've already invested so much into it). I'm saying Sony needs to figure out what the fuck they want to do with the Vita and they need to figure it out, soon. Time is running out. Before long, it won't be whether they should ditch the Vita. The public is going to make that decision for them. This holiday season is make or break time.

edit--forgot I bought a 32GB memoriy card the day before the Vita released.  $99.

The market isn't outright rejecting the PSV there is interest. Just like a high priced PS3 though it's mostly expensive cause of those mandatory memory sticks which they need to bundle ASAP. I do think the hardware is golden and Sony made a beauty. I just wish they weren't always lacking with software.  Sony shouldn't ditch the PSV it's great hardware for CHEAP build cost that is similar yet arguably more powerful than what's out there right now as far as tablets and smartphones. An XL edition would only slightly raise cost and would give it room for a bigger battery. If Sony can't leverage all the great things they have going for them it's gonna be really sad to watch.

@ d21lewis
I only care about the quality of my gaming experience. I still wouldn't pull my android phone for gaming even if it's more socially acceptable to do.  Only touch mechanics tend to make for more slower pc like experience(touch = less accurate mouse for many of them) or mostly shallow horribly controlled action games(that is my experience at least).

I see where it could go and it could be compelling and beautiful. It shouldn't even be that difficult except for some of my next winter fanboy isms like PS2 PSN games on PSV but the rest I'm surprised they hadn't started with. Releasing a PSV in march with no GoW?  No big app or AR games? It seems Sony wants to become synonymous with it's users waiting on software here is a peak:

Summer:
PS1 games!
Tons of Niche JRPGs New and Old lol.

Fall:
GTA 3:SD HD(easy port job why hasn't this been done) easily the best 50-100 million Sony could spend right now.  Release to PS3 1 to 2 to years later to give PSV that exclusive it needs.

Winter:
GTVV (De res and get on it with a career mode A-holes Racers with RPG elements mix well on a portable)

Spring:
Fitness coach with AR. Use voice control and other features of PSV to help it monitor you.
Game Calendar like software for free to go with that maybe integrates alarm clock game on a more massive basis.
Any down rezed up socialed PS360 that missed holiday release like AC:R etc.

Summer:
Invizmals with production values.(Cooler more interactive pokemon with more interactivity and Near)
PSS stuido creates lots of android software made better with buttons or simply it's form factor. Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Video, Sketch Mobile Pro,Dolphin HD or Chrome for Android or any decent mobile browser for god sake Sony, ebook readers etc.

Fall:
Announce PSV XL which is even larger screen for $350 to $450
Madden with create a play tools and touch.
Fantasy Foot Ball App.
Dragons Dogma Portable

Winter:
PS2 PSN games at least 25 to 50 at launch
Simultaneous release of down rezed up socialed PS360 with counterparts Some with transfarring stupid publishers without.
PSV becomes cheaper than Ipad with way better games and comparable appage. Profits lol.
LBPKV
PSA:BR
Still no Hacks software sales healthy in the west as well as japan
$ 149 320GBPS3 with one year subscription to PSN+ at $10
PSV XL profits even more.

PSP Go? C'mon Ryan, Vita is not doing so good, but let's not go that far!

Hence, my reasoning for Sony to dump the Vita like a pile of dog poop!!!  The Vita is wasteful drain on Sony's resources, esp during it's current time of crisis. PSV will never sell anywhere close to what the PSP did and it came almost a year too late on the market.  The 3DS will always have it's Nintendo fanbase, a cheap price for entry, innovative 3D screen and dare I say a market for children and young adults. (I still play my 3DS as I love the 3D feature which makes it cool compared to my DROID phone)  The same cannot be said of the Vita as it is trying to hard to both compete with the smart-devices out there which makes it look juvenile and weak!!!  On the 3DS front, the Vita came a year too late with a bloated price of entry and capabilities that are nearly matched by Nintendo's more stable system.  It's true the PSV is vastly superior to the 3DS in terms of graphical performance, but the 3DS itself is a capable graphical machine (nearly equivalent to the Wii) that can easily satisfy most dedicated handheld gamers.

I very much doubt it.  I think Sony is feeling a lot of pressure especially with it's investors to drop the Vita having sold less than 2M units in the 5 months the system had been released!  One also has to wonder what else Sony could do in terms of games; since most of it's launch games oozed AAA caliber, first-party titles that ranged from Uncharted to Lumines to WipeOut.  Third party companies will not be willing to invest in software development that have little to no chance of return.  Sony should really just drop the system and concentrate it's efforts on the PS4 as Nintendo and Microsoft seem to have already focused on what their next generation strategy will be.
