happyD, I think you're off the beat here (is that the expression?)...

You shouldn't focus on the graphics - that's not what Mario is, or ever was, about (thu, they really did look awesome way back in the 80's!). They're about fun! And you can't judge that yet.

the thing I'm most dissapointed with with 2D mario is that it's not pushing any more limits! They used to show everyone what could be done! I don't feel like they've managed to do that since the early 90's. The same actually goes for Sonic: he's not popular any more cuz he's not relevant any more!

The reason for the NSMB-series popularity is in parts due to the fact that we hadn't had a 2D Mario when it came out to the DS, and that the Wii version gave you the coop option. But other than the coop Mario ain't pushing it in 2D any more! They're playing safe. THAT'S what you should be raging about happyD! Visuals don't make the game good.

Hey Danne! Thanks for popping by.

So, I agree that not pushing the envelope is reason for gripe. If you notice in my OP, I mention that. I also mention the generic nature of some of the art in these early screens. It makes me thing Nintendo is not putting in the effort they should on their biggest-selling game.

As Lord Ciansworth pointed out, this might be intentional to preserve the winning formula of the title (NSMB). If that's the case though Danne, I really don't want to play it, I'm not big on cash-ins.

C'mon :) you don't think clouds with smiling faces is cheesy? cuz they had those from the start :) Cheesyness is part of Super Mario. I understand that you don't like the art style, and I'm niether too impressed - I'd love to see something similar to the "2D" aspects of Mario Galaxy (where they played with gravity 'n stuff), but saying that you won't buy it cuz Nintendo is cashing in on it is like saying that you won't buy the Wii U, you know since they're only releasning THAT to make some money...

And Hello to you too btw :) nice to be greeted when stoping by to make a comment :D

@Wiibox3. True it is early to tell. But as much as some are praising it this far, some of us are underwhelmed. For sure things can change till then, or new info we didn't know will take our breath away, but when it comes to graphics, unless an unexpected change of direction is given, I believe I will be underwhelmed in the presentation department of this massive installment.

It's also one of the reasons why I bought my 3DS, for upcoming massive installments such as this one... it was wishful thinking if this is any indicator of it.

I truely understand you dilemma. I use to do this same thing, but now I have gotten to the point where I don't buy a new system until there are plenty of games out that I want to play.

Though as I stated in another thread, I would get a 3DS if Nintendo sticks Shy Guy in another Mario game on it as an enemy. I loved Mario Bros 2, even though many claim it's not a real Mario game.

@Danne

Thanks

To be honest, I don't know why, but I never found the clouds or the other mario graphics cheesy before. But these I do, they are too kiddy, really.

When SMB came out, it was matte, it had an appeal for all ages. SMB3 followed in those awesome footsteps, nothing too kiddy, yet appealed to everyone. SMW was a little on the bright side, but that was just due to the SNES' new HW capabilities I guess. I guess I kind of accepted Yoshi and all because I was still a kid. Mind you no one else in my family seemed to mind it.

But some of the things I see here (the spiders, the lack of detail on the walls and such) is almost less detail than the bricks in Mario 1! :( It really doesn't appeal to me at all for some reason, and I don't know if I'm alone to think so.

Some graphics in the new 3D Marios I find also kiddy, but the game's luster in general is one that shouts "Quality". I don't see that here, but I hope as hell I'm wrong.

@Wiibox3. I really wanted the 3DS also for other things too (such as having SFIV on my Nintendo console yay), for playing some old DS games and other great 3DS games. But Mario 2D was an important consideration in my purchase, as will be the next portable installment of LoZ.

I know what you mean... I've missed out on LoZ: WW cuz of it - but I'm thinking of getting it! I would looove to see Nintendo do something like Rayman: origins with Mario! That's cartoonish, but at the same time gorgeous!!

Could we just stop whining and wait 'til they present the full product at E3 please? Goddamnit, we only have 4 bad quality screenshots and a name.

Oh, it would seem that I have failed to grasp the meaning of being a member of a video game forum; I was under the impression that we came here to express our thoughts about video games - but I must have been wrong. It wasn't my intention to insult someone by discussing games here, my apologize.

No, we can't. If people can praise it already, then so can people express their early doubt and feelings of being underwhelmed. It should be a fair compromise.

It baffles me that people can't grasp a simple truth about gaming: graphics are there to present the rest of the game; that's all there is to it. Graphics help tell the story or give the game charm, they should not be the focus of the experience, but merely a pleasant cherry on top of an already good game; doubly so when it comes to Mario. We already know the story, we already understand the gameplay, there's absolutely no reason in the world to complain about perfectly charming graphics just because the game isn't utilizing the full power of the system it's on. That doesn't mean you can get away with the bare minimum, but a game like mario has always been about solid platforming and level design, no mario game (with the plausible exception of super Mario RPG) has ever been about stretching the boundaries of its respective hardware.

Frankly, if I'm going to complain about anything regarding New Super Mario Brothers 2, it's going to be about what I expect to be a shortage on levels. given the inevitably huge sales this game will get, it wouldn't kill them to take the time to add more levels, it'll still make a monstrous profit.

Graphics whores bother me.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

It looks fine.

How do you think they could improve it anyways? More polygons/higher resolution textures aren't going to make it look that much better imo
