Forums - Sales - Yearly Hardware Sales Transitions in Japan

one thing that really screws up the sales all around the world is the game boy color, so many people bought a new system because of it even though they had the regular game boy. I was one of these people, and my friends were also. The DS had another model but that was much earlier in its lifetime and it wasn't selling as well before that.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Wii Fit / Play / Sports are likely to be regulars in the top 10 software all year, much like Brain Training / More BT / Animal Crossing / MK DS were all through 2006 and the first half of 2007, Smash Bros also won't do Wii any harm. I predicted Wii sales to be above DS this year in Japan, which i think is quite possible.

@Avinash_Tyagi, Wii is most likely to peak in 2008 - with Galaxy, Zelda:TP, Brawl, Mario Kart, Wii Sports / Fit / Play, MH III, more Square-Enix stuff, a crossover of other 3rd party stuff like Powerful Pro BB and an increase of supply then 2008 should be Wiis biggest year in Japan. Price drops and colours tend to have much less of an effect in Japan than in the west and consoles tend to peak earlier over there.

yeah wii will most likely peak this year though in japan only in america it will peak the year it gets its first price drop

2 interesting things I saw:

#1. The DS sales in Japan are down! I was rather supprised.

#2. PSP sales are real strange - 2.25m, 1.88m, then 3.11m - Very odd, eh?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

It proves that sales can peak twice, which is quite nice in itself.

Dynasty Warriors, Powerful Pro Baseball, SRW may all see better sales on Wii than PS3 (none have ever been known for flashy graphics) and this would just push third party support in Japan more and more in that direction.

Other than better graphics, what else do Dynasty Warriors fans want? The gameplay is nearly the same for all the games in this series. LOL (but I still like it) :)

I doubt Wii owners in Japan care that much about the Dynasty Warriors. Otherwise, Bandai and Koei would have also port Dynasty Warriors Gundam to Wi, not just PS2. Powerful Pro Baseball may see its release in both PS2 and Wii for another 2-3 years (like 2007), and slowly transit to Wii/PS3.

A lot of hardcore games in Japan are still waiting for a reason to buy PS3. Let's see what's gonna happen in 2008. When Sony figure out a way to reduce the price and size of PS3, more "general/casual" gamers will jump in.   I think we will see the coexistence of PS3 and Wii in a great number of Japanese households.

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

seems like peak is either 3rd or 4th year (the systems that peaked in 3rd year, were they released in spring?)

The PSP seems to have gotten out of its rut hardware wise.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

#1.  Market saturation is a reality, even for unprecedented popularity, eventually they fulfill most of the market needs.  I think that DS is already past PS2 in Japan LTD sales so that represents most of the videogame market.  Most of the additional sales we see now can be attributed to the blue ocean strategy.

#2.  The additional sale peak occured in line with the PSP slim release right?

Yes, the release of two big titles: Monster Hunter Portable 2 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII also helped.
