I'd liek to point out that that's actually a really fcuking shitty change. I havebeen able to troubleshoot blue screens, at least once, by what the actual error is. Now it's just dumbed down and completely fucking useless, even more so than before.

Well there is still an actual error message on the screen at the bottom, and the full error message will be in the log.

By their own admission MS didn't even know what some of the on the old BSOD actually meant anymore, this way it is easier to see what the error actually is. "HAL INITILIZATION FAILED" is no less useful than "STOP Error 0x00000061: HAL1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED"

Do you guys still get blue screens in Win 7 (now 8)?

I haven't seen one in like... ever.

I'll be waiting out for Windows 9.

Since moving to win7 I have had one, and that was due to a failing graphics card.

Still an ugly OS that I will never own. Maybe Windows 9 will go back to a useful design instead of a bunch of square boxes all over the screen. Big step backwards IMO.

Wasn't Windows 7 released approximately last week? Why should people upgrade yet again? Furthermore, this looks terrible.

One can only hope that Windows 8 leads to a few more people checking out Ubuntu (linux), it's free, easy to install and use, and faster than Windows (less overhead). And you can even use Windows programs under Ubuntu if required (there's an awesome tool called Wine for that). Give it a try if you haven't already; in order to test Ubuntu you can even install (and uninstall) it under Windows, just like a regular program (of course it's not as fast that way).

Uggh. Have they released a new update since 11.10? Unity was a horrid idea, and I hated the changes they made to Gnome :3. When I install W8 my Ubuntu partition is getting deleted

Hmm dilemma. Should I take a chance on Win 8 or buy a new pc just before it comes out. Last time I was stuck with my old pc until Win 7 came out. Did not want vista, and Win 8 doesn't look very nice either.

I still prefer win xp anyway, starts fast, only uses a 250mb memory footprint and never has updates anymore. Every time I turn on my win 7 desktop it has to update something. Then when I turn it off to take it over to the big screen tv I get the dreaded screen, please wait while installing updates 1 of 7. Then please wait while applying updates while booting it back up. Drives me crazy.

Oh, and Microsoft deserve kudos for making W8 a friendly system. It may not seem like much, but Microsoft have polished the presentation to the point where everything feels a little alive and welcoming. Case in point, the new blue screen of death:

I'd be pretty sure that all the info you require would be contained in the minidump file it generates and also in the system logs.

Getting a laptop in a few months. After reading this, I'll definitely make sure it has Windows 7 on it.

this is just a startup screen which can be closed to go into a normal looking windows.

I hope you can disable it completely.
