By the way, you should get heartgold or soul silver, There's 16 gyms (8 in johto, 8 in kanto) and it's one of the most refined pokemon games ever, plus you get to explore kanto and johto!! that's 2 regions in 1 game!!!

My recommendation as well. Nintendo probably won't ever release Pokemon on one of it's eShops or Virtual Consoles, for one main reason.

Nintendo and GameFreak/Pokemon Company love the idea of Pokemon being portable and on the go, a 3DS eShop release would fit that, but adding in the ability to trade/battle others would make them have to do more work for the title then just a straight emulation, so it is more likely to implement all that is required they would just make either a eShop exclusive brand new Pokemon or forgo it all together and just focus on the retail software.

That doesn't mean a Pokemon main game won't happen appear as a download later, but it will be a few years probably and knowing Nintendo, like they did with the Ambassador games, the initial release will probably be a promotion or something, a little bit buggy and stays exclusive at least for its initial release if not just a limited time download.

If you own them you are legally allowed to make a backup! Go ahead and download 'em.

LOL, first answer is the best one. You can even get emulators on droid which will play the GB/GBC/GBA versions of these games, so you can still play them on the go.

If you own a legal copy of a retail game, you can download a emulation legally for backup purposes. This is actually how I beat Fire Emblem for DS, and how I plan to play Soma Bringer (Japanese exclusive).

Due to my love for Fire Emblem, I bought the game new and never opened it. I beat it entirely off an R4 ROM.

For the case of Soma Bringer, there are fully fan translated versions online to download. I have downloaded them and tested them to work and play in English, and plan to import a copy of this game off ebay (used it sells for $20-$30 with shipping, which is reasonable). I may get other patched games if the prices are reasonable and I confirm the patch works (Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Mother 3, Tales of Inocence, and ASH for DS and GBA, however ASH is a maybe as I can't find an english translation).

If this still isn't good enough, buy HeartGold/SoulSilver for DS and FireRed/LeafGreen for GBA. If you have a DS Lite or newer model DS/3DS, I think Pokemone Red/Blue is now available on the virtual console.

There's so much legal FUD surrounding copyright law still. In the runup to SOPA and PIPA i remember being told that me watching streaming anime was illegal, when i'm fairly positive it isn't. The fun with the backup copies rule vs the digital millennium copyright act rule is that other people have done the circumvention for you, so you simply take a copy made and play it, and are within your full legal (and certainly moral) right to do so.

It maybe depending on where you are watching it, there are plenty of illicit anime streaming sites out there.
