Forums - Gaming - What if games were five bucks?! (Kinda)

Tagged games:

Seeing how DLC is turning out, I figured, why not ask this question, and find out about how some of you feel about this....

But, what if, when you say, for example, picked up Dark Stalkers 4, from gamestop, for 5 bucks, new.  Took the game home, popped it in, and, there's no modes, or characters?  Instead, you head to the system's marketplace, and, from there, you choose who you want to buy, and these characters are unlocked for you.  Granted, yes, they are on the disc, at your ease.  Because, rather or not if you paid for it, you're eventually going to need the data... to fight others that have it, and if the same data is on your hard drive make it okay, well, that's dumb...  It's like you'd be okay if the disc was more emptied.

But, basically, you get the bare minimum of the game for 5 bucks, and, then, take it home to buy the playable portion of it.  And, you can buy all the content available for the game for, say, 80 dollars, or, you can get a certain amount of content for 60.

Before anyone bring up the failed "car" analogy.   What about the free locked demos you get from the store?  Should you be allowed to get that demo free, and then, unlock the rest of the game free because it was given to you?  Rhetorical question, don't answer it.

But, I don't mean for this to be solely for fighters, but, all games.  What if it was 5 bucks, and all you got free was a main menu?

It's an interesting concept to think about I'll give you that.

Terrible. I hate it. It's bad enough that games are released with day 1 dlc, but at least it's never essential, only extra.

I want to go back to the days when you buy a game, you own it and can do what ever you want with it including selling it. I don't want DLC, Online Pass, or Micro Transactions. I just want the game, in full, on disc, ready to be played.

I've actually thought of this concept but it can be abused...cause you wont know what is actually in the game and what is DLC if this concept existed.

Pretty much companies would be making alot of money off of this idea but I can also see a backlash occurring from this idea.

You would know what's in the game, because you can browse the store, and, be told by the company what to expect to be in the DLC packages.  If you dind't know that, why would you buy in the 1st place?

Nah. No good. I already have too many games. I'd still just buy the ones I wanted. As for the DLC, I just want to pay full price for a full game. Whatever the MSRP is, I want a complete experience. Anything beyond that needs to be extra. If the MSRP is $80, I want a full game. If the MSRP is $1, I want a full game. If I want more, it's good to know it's there but don't skimp on the game.

No, that would be horrible for the developers and publishers. When you spend several million dollars making a game. And then your entire fanbase buys the game, for say $20, you will need to sell a lot more games then are being sold already.

Plus prices take forever to drop on online services

Well, you're not going to get a full experience.  That's dependant on the buyer's personal opinion.  What you get from the physical store, initially, wouldn't be an experience.  Just like you cannot buy a PS3 game, and play it with no PS3 console, this DLC thing is kinda an extension of that, if that makes sense.

You're not buying the experience, you're buying a "hub," on which, to obtain the experience.  60 dollars lost, is still 60 dollars lost, no matter what spin you put on it.  The full exerience, as you call it, would be 60 dollars.  But, if you want extras beyond that (totally optional) then, that's up to you, also.

I bought SFxT, Limited Edition...  Not satisfied.  I only find myself enjoying one character, (Juri) and the entire Tekken cast feels stiff..  I paid 80, with shipping charges.  Now...  Where's my full experience?

This is why my Genesis is getting all the attention right now...  Until Final Showdown, and Dead or Alive are released.

The echo isn't needed, if you have nothing to say, don't post.

The model which you suggested I find most unsatisfactory. Now what I would like is what Sony did with Killzone 3. Sell the game's multiplayer modes separate from the actual game for a lower price than the full game.

Terrible idea for most genres.

People don't want to deal with a bunch of micro transactions to get the whole experience of a game.
