If you haven't done so, you should file a police report.

I took no information. One of the ladies nearbye got his license number, but that is it. I should have, now that it has been hours, but I was not hurt so at the time I was just going to get my son from school. Oh, well.

The problem with not getting the police involved is that, the person was obviously not paying attention to his driving, and from what I could gather drove some distance while you were on his car. He shouldn't be driving. It's unreasonable for a driver to fail to pay attention and "almost" hit someone, it's unacceptable in any circumstance for a driver to hit someone, regardless of whether there was injury or not. There is a gross negligence on the part of that driver, and the fact that he didn't hurt you doesn't negate the fact that one day he may kill someone else. Letting him off the hook doesn't do anyone any good. Your convenience today may be someone else's life another day.
Secondly, you have no recourse if you don't file a complaint with the police. First of all, both you and the driver have left the scene of an accident without reporting it, which if you're in the US is against the law. Yes, it's an accident. You were struck, nearly run over, and he drove some distance without stopping while you were on the hood. Without a police report, you can't file a claim against him or his insurance if at a later date you do end up experiencing an injury as a result of the accident.
Your child's school would have understood that she was delayed.
I only make mention of this because a few weeks ago a crosswalk guard was runover by a driver who failed to yield to her. The crosswalk guard, like you was relatively uninjured, but the driver of the vehicle got away.
What if that driver has a history of this? What if next time, instead of an adult crossing the street, that driver hits a child? What if, unlike you, the child can't grab onto the hood to prevent themselves from being run over? I understand we don't want to make trouble for other people, but driving is a privlege and a responsibility, one not to be taken lightly. Letting someone off for not killing you haven't nearly running you over does no one any good. They shouldn't be driving or at least it should go on their record.
I am glad you're ok, but don't do people favors like that. In the end you don't do them any favors.
