Fact of the matter is, the consoles are old and the graphics chips in the Xbox and PS3 were half-decent at release but we have had 6-7 graphics card generational leaps since then, the processors aren't anything to write home about, they're simple in-order cores which aren't going to dramatically increase image quality because they contain no rasterization hardware, they can do post-processing stuff like Morphological Anti-Aliasing, but that's still not on the same level as real Anti-Aliasing, the Cell is no exception.


I think we have seen all the large graphical leaps this generation on the consoles, basically I think developers may go the path of reducing level sizes to increase image quality, but there won't be any large leaps from this point on untill next generation, as they say you cant get blood out of a stone.

I say the game looks very promising, its being made by developers who made 2 of the best looking games this gen and i still think its gonna look better than uncharted 3, which is like i said before, already an astonishing achievement.

And the guys from Game Informer played the demo said it looks insanely good (google game informer the last of us) and here are some more in game screenshots

The PS3 has pretty much peaked. Uncharted 2 & GoWIII were absolutely stunning. Since then we've seen gradual improvements but we're at a stage where developers have to make major concessions in other areas to make improvements in graphical fidelity.

That's exactly what I was thinking. God of War III was at the top for me followed closely by Uncharted 2. Little improvement visually since then.
Heavy Rain was up there too.

hmm for some things you have to see videos, picture can never show some "important" things you only realize in a video.

but i read in a german magazine as well that they think the last of us will look even better than uncharted 3, they played a little bit of it.

as example they say ellie can bite in her own lipps and then she's bleeding there. don't think other games on consoles have those small but great graphically details if not fight night^^ this alone (cuts in the face and blood on the walls after a fight and so on) are an improvement to uncharted.

I think the HD twins still have a bit more to show us. I think The Last of Us and Halo 4 will amaze alot of jaded gamers.



I'm waiting to see what GOW 4 looks like..SM did it with the ps2 at the end of last gen and I wouldn't be surprised to see something incredible yet again

I think Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us are the peak of this generation's capability.

The resolutions on those pictures are tiny and only 720P. What would happen if you grabbed that image and stretched it across say... A 50" or larger 1080P panel? Suddenly, it's going to suddenly have allot of jagged edges, it already looks like molasses at my resolution of 3240x1920. (3x 1920x1080 panels in portrait, can do landscape at 5760x1080).

Most of the pictures though that are floating around are from the devs themselves.
And here is an example of what they did.





Now, if you're happy with that kind of image quality and think it's the "best" then you are sorely missing out. (When compared to a good PC)

If you look at the fences, the crates etc' in the opening sequence, there is a significant amount of aliasing, it looks horrible.
The shadows are no where near as defined as those in the pictures (They are blurry and have artifacts.)
Then if you look at the textures on some characters and objects and even parts of the ground it's low resolution and blurry.
