Is Cowboy Bepop good as well? |
I think I tried it once, I guess I wasn't in the mood for cowboy bepop, can't remember much of it.
Are you just trying to push my buttons with VHS :p Talking about the best 5.1 surround soundtrack in 15mbps lossless 24bit 192khz soundmix, and you mention VHS :)
Actually one of the main reasons 192khz sound is so rare is because you can only make it from an original analog recording in great condition. You can't upconvert any movie that came out later with digital sound. So on VHS you actually get the superior soundtrack to the standard DVD (albeit only stereo) http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.8.24.112921.289.html The fact is you actually need 192khz sampling to capture the full fidelity of analog sound. Akira also cleverly makes use of a lot of instruments that benefit from analog or 192khz recording.
Anyway even with no sound, you should watch that movie!
Kiki's delivery service. 8/10
Still great fun, very charming, had my kids entertained today. Looks great on blu-ray, sound is good, restricted to stereo though. And there is a weird warble in the English voice acting, maybe it's just Kirsten Dunst's voice. Did not effect the other characters.
The wind rises. 9/10
Great story showing a lot of passion both in the characters and in the work that went in the movie. It looks amazing. And even though it's a sentimental biography it still has plenty magic Ghibli moments. Definitely want to watch it again soon, plus got me interested in reading up on the real Jiro Horikoshi.
Beyond the black rainbow. 8.5/10
Awesome film editting, color filters gone mad with a great hypnotic score to match the visuals. However wtf was going on. That was part of the fun anyway.
Stalker (1979) 8/10
3 men venture into the zone to find a room that grants your inner most desires. It's the first movie of Tarkovsky that I've seen and it's a great one. It's very good at building mystery and suspense, yet the meat of the movie is in the conversations and monologues of the main characters. During their journey they reflect on their lives, the nature of man and desire. I was hooked from start to finish despite watching on you tube in crappy 480p with my wifi cutting out 6 or 7 times during the movie.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
its simply amazing..every single frame is a piece of art like a moving picture and the music was also great. interesting little story and a great emotional ending.
8.5/10

Great, I had it in pre-order list already, no release date yet.
I have Solaris in my wish list. I would like to watch it on blu-ray but $37 is a bit steep. I watched the 2002 George Cloony version a couple years ago, didn't do it for me. Damn why did digital kill Blockbuster over here, they had a pretty well stocked foreign movie section. The most you can rent nowadays is the latest blockbusters.
Maybe I should just watch the 480p version http://www.openculture.com/2010/07/tarkovksy.html

weird that theres no release date since I watched the blu ray. I heard they showed it in theaters somewhere..
about solaris and the remake to me they are completely different movies ..I dont think it will be less good if you watch 480p. I dont agree about everything with this guy but yeah take a look so you know what to expect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kZtYMNh_IA

Dawn of the planet of the apes 6/10
I don't know what I wanted from the movie, but this was far too predictable, down to the exact words of the dialogue. The cgi apes weren't all that great either, seems they always keep them in the shadows, in diffuse lighting or overcast weather. I guess it doesn't look good in the light. The whole movie looks kinda drab and washed out.
It was still entertaining, although I did watch it at 1.5x speed towards the end. Maybe I should not watch a popcorn flick right after Tarkovsky and a visual master piece like Beyond the black rainbow :)
Solaris (1972) 7.5/10
Definitely much more interesting than the 2002 remake, I really liked Khari's internal struggle. The movie does start too slow for my tastes, I didn't really get hooked until an hour in. Stalker had me hooked from the start. I'll keep the blu-ray on my watch list, you tube made quite a mess of the visuals at times, imposible to make out what that ocean was supposed to look like for example, just a pixelated blur.
rewatched predator again remastered blu ray now you can tell they are in a jungle..
best line

Yeah mars attacks is one of those movies that gets worse with repeat watching, no double dipping there.
Watched How to train your dragon 2 7.5/10
Spectacular yet missing the humor and originality of the first one. It looks great, however they should not have showed the concept art in the end titles :) Those drawings still look much better. It didn't pass my kids' attention test yet my oldest asked when the 3rd one will be out, so must have liked parts of it anyway.
