Forums - Sony - Rumour: PS4 to feature AMD GPU a gen ahead of nextbox

They will accept that it's ok to land on third place and still make sales.

Again, you are missing the point I made above.  TDP for an HD 7950 is 180 watts.  TDP for the X1800 XL the Xenos is based on was 60 watts.

The X1800 XL was also very mid range.    It would be comporable to the HD 7750 of today.

not really sure about that but i believe i always read the equivalent to 360's gpu was the X1800 XT and few parts of 1900? (but i really don't know just what i read few times)

btw the xl came out for 449€ and the xt for 549€ here end of 2005. not speaking about wattage and only about the price, people who think a card costing 500€ atm (like the gtx 680) would mean a console would cost above 1000€ end of 2013 should realize how expensive the cards were in 2005 as xbox 360 came out.

Look at the specs for the XL and Xenos again.  They match up much closer than does the XT.   The other architecture it incoproated was from the R600 series (HD 2xxx) by way of the unified shader.

As for price, you'll notice I don't touch on price in my debate.  Only the TDP.

XL and XT had the same GPU chip, only clocked at different speed... xenos had 9 times more MOperations/s processing power than the XL/XT chip due to the addition of extra processing units... it had a higher clock speed (700 against the 500 of the XL or the 625 of the XT) the TDP was almost for sure around 100 watt because of those modifications. XT had a 105 watt TDP.

if the 7850 has a 130 watt TDP that could be the base for Orbis GPU as well... but my guess is still a Tahiti based GPU.

we will see soon enough!

Sergio, the Xenos is clocked at 500 Mhz...just like the X1800 XL.  The Xenos has a 700 Mhz memory clock which might be waht you are thinking of but that's actually a downclock from the XL's 1,000 Mhz memorcy clock.

And expecting any console to launch with the 250 watt is nuts.   10 year life span....not at 250 watts you don't.

"Sony won't provide backwards compatibility support for PS3 games. . ."

" And most controversial of all is talk of locking games to a PSN account in an attempt to strengthen new game sales. You'll need to be connected to a PSN account in order to play too."

Yeah... well... fuck you, Sony

Businesses tend to go a path that would screw the customer but would support them $$$ wise.

More than likely, they'll make PS3 games digital download on the PS4.

Pretty much it does look like, if you are going to require people to be connected to play, why bother with anything but digital downloads?

i like what I'm hearing!
TBH i don't really care if its no B/C.. but i don't have a lot of room so i need a super slim PS3 (like PS2 slim) size PS3 to stay under the TV! aha
i don't like the Used games lock thing though... i get where they are coming from and its fair from a business standpoint but unless the price of new games comes down upon release seeing as everyone has to buy new then this is poo! i feel lucky that i live in the UK though as games usually come down fast anyway.

oh.. and Playstation Orbis?... NO.. PS4 please. it will just be confusion.
although I'm almost sure it Playstation Orbis as like the post said Orbis + Vita = Circle of Life. (guess thats.. kinda cool)

lol @ anyone who thinks we're going to see games @ 2160p and double lol to those mentioning the iPad 3 as an example ofwhy it should be possible. Get real and lern a bit of tech console kids, and be happy if developers even manage to get to 1080p and 30 fps next gen without screwing up, yes, even if there was your dream console with a Souhtern Islands GPU in the market.

yeah like i said i really don't know i just read it sometimes. and i didn't mean you with my second paragraph i meant some pople who said "the console would cost over 1k with such a gpu"

sry if you thought i mean you with that ;)

I don't think anyone thinks that. The bigger resolutions are for 1080p 3D.

huh? i have a hd 5870 and i can play battlefield 3 on ultra with ~40 fps and 1080p. why shouldn't a console in 2013 play those games or even better games in 1080p with 30fps? it's even easier on consoles and i think the gpu will be better than mine then.

Question for people who know their stuff: Let's say this rumour is right, and along with the GPU mentioned here it has 3-4gb RAM (2gb vram, 1-2gb main ram) and a quad-core cpu at around 3.2 GHz. Will this be able to run BF3 on its highest settings at 1080p & 60fps with AA on? (you can determine how much AA)

So basically we have 3 gens in the next gen.
WiiU-current gen
NextBox-next gen
and PS4-next but one gen

Nice!
It gets a bit complicated...but in comparison with the following gen it's dead easy.
