Forums - Gaming - Nintendo's biggest mistake?

Guess what Nintendo's biggest mistake in history was. First person to answer correctly gets...nothing really, but we can then talk about it.

So any takers?

EDIT: Someone guessed it. Sony was trying to pair up with Nintendo to create a console called PlayStation, but Nintendo dissagreed on the CD distribution method and make a deal with Phillips instead to make the N64. PlayStation is not a major brand name and a huge competitor to Nintendo, also holding the title as the largest selling home console of all time, the PS2. Could have been Nintendo, but they didn't know Sony would go ahead and make a console after their deal went sour.

Intresting typo ...

Nintendo's biggest mistake? Super Mario Sunshine! (nah just joshin')

I disagree,

their mistake is they make games too perfect, therefore 3rd parties don't want to compete on their platform.

Nobody has mentioned it yet, but Nintendo's biggest mistake was to abandon their fanbase. This includes putting their by far biggest IP on hold for 15 years. It's insanity.

But actually, their biggest mistake is to repeat this mistake. They dug themselves a hole that they now have to crawl out of. For the first time in their video game history, they are posting a loss in a full financial year.

Nintendo stopping the SNES CD project may seem like the biggest mistake, because it created a competitor with PlayStation that took the vast majority of third party support. But what you shouldn't forget is that this third party support has not come back, yet Nintendo did beat PlayStation in the seventh generation regardless. What this means is that it wasn't Sony who stopped Nintendo in its tracks in the past, it was Nintendo who caused the downfall of Nintendo, because they stopped making the games that made them popular in the first place.

I will say it is funny how we all forget that Nintendo has always had a super successful 2d Mario franchise, and yet it constantly gets forgotten by the Nintendo management.  I agree there is no reason for a loss in profit on the wii when they have plenty of catalog to make new 2d games with, not even just mario.  That being said I think they are saving the next big 2d Mario for Wii U.

Yeah, it boggles the mind.Nintendo is Nintendo´s worst enemy.

And Miyamoto has (or had?) way too much power and free reign in the company.

Most likely this.  They lost so much of the mind share and games from Japan that they had with the SNES by not going with a CD format that the N64 could hardly be claimed as the successor to the SNES (first party notwithstanding).  But Nintendo didn't have many options since the 3 major CD technology manufacturers had ambitions of making their own consoles (Phillips had the "CD-i", Panasonic had the "3DO" and Sony the "Playstation"). Nintendo needed a tech partner but they didn't want to give up much control of anything which mistakenly led to the CD-i Zelda's with the fallout with Phillips and allowing Sony to evolve the SNES controller into their own.  Nintendo  did not play well with others it seemed and they ended up going it alone and so did the others.  Though the next gen after that all 3 of those CD manufacturers were back as a part of the new machines.  Phillips made the disc drive for the Xbox, Panasonic the drive for the Gamecube and Sony did their own stuff again with the PS2.  In retrospect, Nintendo and the N64 lost Japan at a time when they were the most important to have.

So, did the GameCube's format have something to do with this as well? Do DVD's give money to some company Nintendo didn't want a part in?

There were fees to license DVD tech and they were higher back then.  Different companies owned patents to codecs to play movies, and disc and drive technology.  There is a consortium for DVD tech. Nintendo went to Panasonic's parent company Matsushita to develop a proprietary disc format to avoid fees.  It's basically the same tech only altered, and they're probably doing the same thing with the WiiU.   The WiiU discs are basically proprietary Blu-Ray discs created by Panasonic.  Panasonic (Matsushita) owns a lot of the patents on the Blu-Ray "disc" tech while Sony owns a lot on the "drive" (or vice versa.. can't remember)  So Panasonic most likely created a proprietary Blue laser disc and a special drive for the Wii U to avoid extra fees.

Not partnering with Sony was hardly a mistake; the way Nintendo handled themselves against Sony as a rival was. Oh, and the Philips published CDi Zelda games. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER.
