So now we're comparing Apples 1 year to Microsofts 7 yearS? Seems fair...

Well, apple gaming would have started during the generation that the 360 was released right? you did say this generation? Apple been making iphones since 07, ipad since 09 (edit 2010)?

Yes, but you still can't compare Apples ONE year with MS SEVEN - like you said: Apples been in gaming since 07...

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Also reading would help Im tallying the total of apple from 2005 to present and microsoft from 2005 to present.  Apple had a great year last year, even with it, microsoft has made more money.  But this OT has gone on long enough.

Any investor or prospective investor worth his salt knows to look into growth trends. Last year was the first year Apple had higher net income than Microsoft (per your spreadsheet, MS' net income = $23.15B, per Yahoo! Apple's = $25.92B), but Apple's profits have been growing at a much sharper rate than Microsoft's for quite a while now. There's a reason the stock is valued so highly, despite the fact that Apple has not paid dividends until recently.

Of course, none of this matters, because your argument is silly, and I suspect you know it. Even if you can't invest solely in Microsoft or Sony's gaming divisions, trying to compare the entirety of those organizations' profits with the purely gaming Nintendo is disingenuous; we're not asking who you should invest in, we're asking who "won" the generation.

Really, I'm disappointed that you were handed such a broad-ended question, but still had to resort to this to get a "win."

Even on paper today's graphics cards wipe the floor the the PS3 and XBox's Graphics chip.

For the sake of it... I'll omit the memory bandwidth numbers because in a console they can pair it up with whatever expensive yet stupidly fast memory they want anyway.

PS3:
24 Pixel Shaders, 8 Vertex Shaders, 24 Texture mapping units, 8 Render output pipelines, 550mhz core clock.

Xbox 360: 48 Unified shaders. (Both Pixel and Vertex use the same pipelines.), 16 Texture mapping units, 8 Render output pipelines, 500mhz core clock.

$100 PC graphics card (Radeon 6750):
720 Stream processors. (VLIW5, comparitively would be 144 SP's.), 36 Texture mapping units, 16 rops, 700mhz core clock.

If you go with the Wii U's rumoured 46xx class graphics chip:
320 Stream processors, (64 SP's.), 32 Texture mapping units, 8 Render output Pipelines, Core clock of 500mhz - 1ghz.

VLIW5 architectures that the WiiU uses is generally rather efficient and allows for more throughput per shader cluster than what the PS3 and Xbox is capable of, so even if it *did* have the same amount of shaders it would be far more efficient at pixel and vertex shading with the additional benefit of being able to do geometry shading amongst other things.
Graphics architectures like Fermi and Southern Islands is more geared towards compute, VLIW4 and to a lesser extent VLIW5 is incredibly efficient at graphics  tasks.

If the Wii U is going to be "minimum" in next gen consoles, that should mean some pretty impressive graphics.

Hold a sec there. I know rumors talked about a rv700 chip, not the one on the 46xx family but the one found in the HD4770. When did that change?

It didn't or hasn't.

I don't know why it is still assumed that the WiiU will be on par with the PS3 and XBox 360; the HD 4770 alone puts it above current consoles and the lowest amount RAM has been put by rumors is 768mb. Though it's not much more it will be faster (according to rumors also). Nintendo has said the console will be native 1080p but it has been taken into many perspectives. As it was said earlier in the thread, too many stories saying different things, let's just wait till E3 where final specs will likely be revealed.

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

Apple and Microsoft are both growing but for different reasons, any reasonable investor knows that.  Microsoft lost its growth momentum after the stock tech bubble of 2000 but has been able to provide shareholder value through dividens and finding new ways to grow, like getting into the gaming and media businesses.  Thats what good companies do, they use their capital to try to find new ways to grow.  Something Nintendo has failed to do, especially these last two years despite "winning" this generation.

I dont believe my arguement is silly at all.  Microsoft gaming division has been able to grow sales the length of this generation, and even with the black hole that was RROD, their gaming divison as able to contribute to the bottom line of microsoft and now stands as the strongest of the three game makers.  Microsoft last year made more money than nintendo did the entire DS/Wii generation, thats a fact.  And their position in gaming is only going to get strong from here.  The gaming division has pretty much unlimited resources behind it. I guess that the thing most Nintendo fans are afraid of...deal with it.

resort to this to get a "win."

I know. That's what makes it funny! Y'see, when someone asks "so who won the NFL last year?" you don't respond "the Seahawks, because their owner made the most money!*" Instead, being a rational human being, you stick to the obvious terms of the question, grit your teeth, and say "the Giants, those overrated, prima donna, led-by-a-Downs-Syndrome-QB bastards!" Or, if you're a slithery person who doesn't want to face reality, you say "my team, because (they improved the most/they toughed it through a hard year/they cleared cap space/whatever floats your boat)."

My favorite part of this charade is that I know you're not really this dumb, but you just must play the Console Warz so hard that you can't conceive of admitting that your dog didn't win this fight. And hey, that's cool. All I ask is that, going forward, you use a bit of subtlely and disingenuity. See the latest post you made? The part where you go "woohoo, my team grew a bunch from last generation, despite RRoD! We winnars!" was a good example of claiming victory in spite of the clear meaning of the question. Do more of that. Twist the facts, obfuscate reality, redefine terms when it suits you. You could even play the trite "hardcore gamerz say my system! rar!" card, although that one's...boring.

The point is that, going forward, we expect much better of you. We here at VGC like our corporate cheerleaders to be both flexible and creative. Alternatively, you could go the Rock_On_2008 route of being batshit insane: that's fun too. But right now, your routine is...flawed. Uninspired. It's terrible, but not so much so that we can all point to this thread a month from now and laugh. We might not even remember it in a month! So please, and I ask this from the heart: do better, or do worse.

Your point @bolded is noted, but as noname2200 said, nobody is saying that Microsoft hasn't profited as a company in the last few years.  This isn't about investment tips or saying that Nintendo is a more powerful company than Microsoft.  People are merely pointing out that Nintendo has been far more successful IN THE GAMING MARKET when it comes to profit.   While you may view that as irrelevant in the grand scheme of things regarding Microsoft's bottom line, it's still a fact, and your @underlined statement is truly ironic, as you seem to be the one who can't admit this.

--I didnt join this site to engage in baseless console wars debates.  If you dont agree with my reasoning, thats fine, no water off my back and I am sure its the same for you.  Same for the rest of the VGC community, I dont see how saying what you wrote above is any effective.  I think ioi provides an awesome service for someone like me, who is more investor orientated, to have channel checks on how companies and posting sales of consoles and software is a good way of checking.  I believe microsoft won this generation coming off an awful start, you can throw all the nintendo numbers you want, I already know them all, it doesnt change anything.

-Ridiculing users is I think the primary reason the site is in such decline, but hey.

Guess we have to agree to disagree.

having the same power with a 2005 console just sucks...

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Not really.

It's a fact that Nintendo is more successful financially than MS is in the gaming industry.

That isn't a matter of opinions.
