Any investor or prospective investor worth his salt knows to look into growth trends. Last year was the first year Apple had higher net income than Microsoft (per your spreadsheet, MS' net income = $23.15B, per Yahoo! Apple's = $25.92B), but Apple's profits have been growing at a much sharper rate than Microsoft's for quite a while now. There's a reason the stock is valued so highly, despite the fact that Apple has not paid dividends until recently. Of course, none of this matters, because your argument is silly, and I suspect you know it. Even if you can't invest solely in Microsoft or Sony's gaming divisions, trying to compare the entirety of those organizations' profits with the purely gaming Nintendo is disingenuous; we're not asking who you should invest in, we're asking who "won" the generation. Really, I'm disappointed that you were handed such a broad-ended question, but still had to resort to this to get a "win." |
Apple and Microsoft are both growing but for different reasons, any reasonable investor knows that. Microsoft lost its growth momentum after the stock tech bubble of 2000 but has been able to provide shareholder value through dividens and finding new ways to grow, like getting into the gaming and media businesses. Thats what good companies do, they use their capital to try to find new ways to grow. Something Nintendo has failed to do, especially these last two years despite "winning" this generation.
I dont believe my arguement is silly at all. Microsoft gaming division has been able to grow sales the length of this generation, and even with the black hole that was RROD, their gaming divison as able to contribute to the bottom line of microsoft and now stands as the strongest of the three game makers. Microsoft last year made more money than nintendo did the entire DS/Wii generation, thats a fact. And their position in gaming is only going to get strong from here. The gaming division has pretty much unlimited resources behind it. I guess that the thing most Nintendo fans are afraid of...deal with it.
resort to this to get a "win."
